The age old rule of “never go shopping when you are hungry” should also be extended to “never go shopping in a country you just arrived in, and don’t speak the language of when you are tired, hungry and a little dizzy.”
I walked around the aisles so many times. Trying to figure out what I wanted, trying to figure out what those things looked like and then occasionally just staring at cheese for a while. I had also got used to scandinavias ignoring of each other whilst shopping. I was assuming i would walk through the check out without a word being spoken. But as we were lining up, there were some complications so the lady in front of me use the time delay to continue shopping around me.
She would return with a new item and make a comment to me. and then she cracked a joke with the lady in front and I understood the joke so i laughed too, but then she continued talking until she was through the check out.
I internally laughed and squirmed because she was so nice and friendly and all i could do was nod and laugh. As I was going through the check out the man asked me if i had the small change, and not really understanding what he was saying I shook my head (which was true) and then realised what he had asked.
Body language is GIANT in communicating.
I walked out after having successfully bought some eggs bread and butter. I had vegemite at home.
