Apsley House 🌹
Apsley House is the former home of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, victor of Waterloo!
Apsley House was originally designed and built between 1771 and 1778 for Lord Chancellor Henry, 1st Baron Apsley (later 2nd Earl Bathurst), by the architect Robert Adam (1728–92)! The house was bought by the Duke of Wellington in 1817!
The house is also called the Wellington Museum, and much of the house is open to the public as a museum and art gallery! It exhibits the Wellington Collection, a large collection of paintings, other artworks and memorabilia of the career of the 1st Duke! The 9th Duke of Wellington retains half the house for the family's private use! The practice has been to maintain the public rooms as far as possible in the original style and decor of the 1st Duke!
Sorry I wasn't listening to you, I was thinking about the Duke of Wellington's personal 11-foot-tall statue of nude, totally jacked Napoleon.
Twitter thread! (and yes Kate Beaton's "Nemesis" comic comes up)
