Gonna be applying to the same apt complex I lived in as an adolescent. What a life, I moved there when I was 11, left when I was 18 and then 10 years later I’m looking for a studio apt there and as luck/fate would have it, it’s a few doors down from my old apt I lived in when I was 11. What a life indeed 😌
Ah right the apt hunting horrors
So I go see this apt right bc I’m v over living with my parents and if I keep putting it off until I find a “better job” I’m just going to keep putting it off forever bc I hate every job anyway.
Okay, so I go see the apt and it’s nice enough. Not great, not awful, but it’s alright and the rest of the building/policies sound good enough for the rent, so I ask the property manager who gave me the tour to send over information for applying. Which I just got.
So, idk if it’s different for other places, but for as long as I’ve been living on my own, every landlord had an income requirement of 3x the monthly rent, which I had for this apt and why I bothered to look at it in the first place. So, I read the email and it says they want annual income of 39x the rent, or the application is denied outright.
Alright, kinda weird, and I do the math and I’m just short of that number. But, that shouldn’t be a problem. If I show my parents the numbers and that I can reasonably afford to live and pay for this place on my own, they should be amenable to the idea of co-signing. This place allows co-signers for an additional $25 on the application and the pain of getting everyone’s documents together (yes! You also have to pay for the pleasure of getting your application submitted to them!).
Except! There is also a co-signer income requirement for 49x the monthly rent. Which for the particular unit I looked out crunches out to approximately 93k.
So, to round it out, for an apt that under (what I’ve known up until this moment as) normal circumstances that I could qualify for on my own, I need a co-signer who makes just under a six-figure sum? Did I get all that correctly?
Ah, yes, the horrors, but it seems the horrors have gotten more…horrible while I’ve been living at home.
So, my girlfriend Becky and I are planning on moving in together this summer after our separate leases expire, and unfortunately in Vermont, housing is at premium in this sellers market. But I may have just chanced upon a opportune and incredibly affordable apartment a couple towns over, so I'm very excited and hope it pans out well.
If it does, I could feasibly and easily pay off all my debts in about 3 years, which would be hella sweet! And that brings the possibility of home ownership realistically onto the table within another 3-5 years, which is all sorts of exciting in its own right!
Searching for a place to live has been the most exhausting thing ever, literally hate it :(
Last night someone who had showed me their place reached out and gave me first pick. I was telling my parents and my mom was like wow you pops. Not in those words. And my dad was like duh she’s so sweet and is like THIS *makes exaggerated pose of leaning in and staring at my mom* when people talk. And that is exactly how I want to be. Paying attention and listening intently. Always forever.
saw 3 places. walked 6.5 miles from the last place back to where i’m staying. a 17 minute drive took me 2.5 hours. lol why did i do that
a lot of people bike around here though. more bike friendly than la. i love that. god knows what hes doing. speaking of which. visited a church today and it was bad vibes. the website looked so normal...
i think my criteria going forward will be whether i can go through a service without cringing. and i feel like my cringe threshold has lowered substantially over the years. or maybe it’s just a phase? i dont know. i just remember this easter they used some guy’s story of how he had a heart attack and almost died but in the hospital a pastor came to visit him and he accepted jesus and literally and figuratively came back to life. i can’t tell if “my heart is hardened” or if its truly eye-roll worthy. but i was definitely over it. idk christianity is fucking weird. also criteria, there’s got to be a band. specifically a drum set. its the 21st century.
yoooo if yall know how to find decent apts in NYC hit me up. finding a 2bed for $1950 that ain’t in ocean hill or brownsville is almost impossible
