TOURMALINE Colour: Mostly transparent with many variations in hues. Can also have Cat’s Eye effect. Found in: Brazil, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Sri Lanka and Tanzania There is currently over one hundred different shades of colour and names for Tourmalines. Often there is more than one colour in an individual specimen; these are called "Polychrome Tourmalines". According to an old Egyptian legend, while tourmaline was on its long journey up from the centre of the earth, it passed through a rainbow. In doing so, it assumed all the colours of the rainbow and is therefore referred to as the rainbow gemstone. The name tourmaline comes from the Sinhalese word ‘tourmali’ which means ‘stone with mixed colours’, referring to its colour spectrum. If rubbed or heated, this charges the crystal which then appears to have a small magnetic field. This is known as pietzoelectricity and is used in a wide range of today’s technologies like cell phones (mobile phones), PCs and electric keyboards and many other things besides. It is the stone for authors, poets, editors and teachers. The connection with knowledge stems from tourmaline’s magnetic properties.
