Our last full day on Bocas and there’s still no rush to get up. We both feel totally at ease here. It’s the longest we’ve spent in any one place and I could easily stay another week.
We decide to spend our last full day at Red Frog Beach. Felicitas has warned us that it’s a little built up but beautiful. On the way to get a water taxi we buy our tickets for Boquete the next day. There’s a water taxi chap in the hostel where we buy tickets and offers us a cheaper ride as there’s a group going. We sit and wait and after a bit the bloke comes over and says the rest are taking way to long and do we want to go now? We do so off we potter.
We have a small boat to ourselves and zip over in double quick time. As we arrive another large group is getting off their boat. I recognise them as the owners of the microbrewery and their friends. They’ve got their children with them and we get caught up in the middle of the group as we enter the park. It’s sposed to be a $5 entry fee but the yanks kick up a bit of a fuss and we just put our heads down and walk in without paying.
It’s a 15min walk to the beach. We were expecting sun loungers galore but it looks pretty chilled and beautiful. We walk in the surf and find a spot under some tree shade to settle.
We’re both thinking more and more about life after travelling and spend large portions talking about the future. In part trying to fight off the sadness that this is coming to an end. It dawns on me or Cath points out that every day we’ve been traveling we’ve woken up happy. There’s no worrying about work that’s to be done or some meeting to go to. Just waking, dressing, eating and experiencing things. It’s liberating to feel no weight of expectation. When I was what’s apping my family they were saying how quick it’s gone – but for me it seems a lifetime. Everyday has been different, full of sights and sounds that are new. Instead of being sad that’s it’s coming to an end we agree to keep living it to the full. It’s good to plan though and we’ve plenty to look forward to. Cath says that this is the greatest start to our marriage and she’s bang on. I won’t get to spend this amount of time with her again for a while. Though I can defo see another career break being applied for in time!
Red Frog is a lovely beach. There’s a slight current but nothing that stopped us splashing about in the surf. I spend 30 mins watching a crab excavate a hole. We eat some lovely fish tacos at a beachside hut and there’s yet another tiny puppy pottering about. Even the steroid pumped yanks are making baby faces over it.
We’ve arranged to meet the water taxi at 4 and the day seems to have disappeared. It’s been sunny without being scorching so we’ve been chatting lazing and dozing for hours. As we get to the entrance the young man asks us where our wristbands are. As we flounder about a bit another taxi driver says “oh did you walk round” “yup!” I say hurriedly. Cath’s trying to get out of paying altogether but in the end we end up paying $3 each but as the guy has no change he settles for a $5 bill. Our taxi awaits us and we ask him to drop us off at Aqua Lounge for a drink.
It’s not quite happy hour at Aqua lounge and we decide to have a caipirinha each. The barman takes real pride making it and as I sit and wait whilst Cath dives into the water. Aqua lounge is on stilts over crystal blue water. The caipirinhas are lush. We watch a septic couple arse about on the swings and rope that dangle over the water. At one point he makes as if to do something spectacular off a trampoline but bottles it much to my annoyance. The caipirinha’s are so good we have another and then it’s happy hour and we have a $1 beer each before catching a water taxi back to the main island.
As we walk through town we decide to grab another beer at a super American bar but it’s still happy hour and the beer is cheap. A little peckish we share some wings but the sauce is a touch too runny which is disappointing.
Back at the ranch we cook up a bolognese and drink another beer. We reflect on our travels some more reading old entries from the blog which remind of us of things we’d forgotten. Then the draughts comes out. Rather predictably Cath beats me. Though I win one game – I suspect she let me win. I feel so content here it’s untrue.
