Aquamelon’s Top 10 Rare Records, part 2

Through a shared love of house Aquamelon was started in 2003 by Steve Nash and Colin Brown in a record store in Slough,UK. They released various tech-house and breakbeat tracks from artists such as The Dark Nites, 120 Dance and Duncan Grey. The label went on hiatus in 2009 but after a recent renewed interest in their catalogue the guys are back with both vinyl reissues of sort after tracks and fresh new material both on wax and digitally. We have asked Steve and Colin to each pick out 5 top rare tracks for Enchanted Rhythms. This is part 2 of a 2, Steve Nash’s selection, find part 1 here.

1. Jah Scouse - Drugs / 051 Records (1992)

A rare 7” which samples Fool’s Gold and has a ragga vocal about drugs over the top. Took me forever to find this one and left my pockets a lot thinner.

2. 120 Dance - Iif / Aqualemon (2003)  

Tucked away on the B side of the first and sadly last release on our offshoot label Aqualemon, this dark breaks track has a clever sample from the film Taxi Driver. This was also played on Radio 1’s essential selection by James Zabiela.

3. Dust Brothers - Song To The Siren / Diamond Records (1992)

Released long before they were forced to change their name to the Chemical Brothers. This breaks track confused clubbers and record label bosses alike for being slow, leftfield and at the time totally hard to categorise.

4. Unknown Artist - Xbug / Not On Label (2002)

On a limited green vinyl this rare 12” was at one stage passing hands for £50. Another sample based track which cuts up Brainbug’s Nightmare and is full of old hardcore samples.

5. Phil Collins - I'm Not Moving (Idjut Boys Edit) / Not On Label (2002)

Another 12” which left my pockets empty. I managed to get the version which had swamp funk on the other side.

1. Unknown Artist - Go Dj / not on label (2006)

When Steve and I started Aquamelon we didn’t have a distribution deal, so we would take the records around to each of the stores across London on foot to try and persuade them to take a few copies on 'Sale or Return'. Most places were very supportive and would offer encouragement by taking 5 or 10 copies at a time. But we also came up against some real snobbery, some stores would take one look at the label and tell us “no we don’t do that kinda thing here, mate” without even listening to it.

A couple of such encounters led us to believe that if we walked in to these stores with a shrink wrapped white label that said “made in Detroit” on the label, these snobs would bite your hand off for every copy they could lay their hands on. At the same time I had just finished this rough techno track, so we thought we’d put it out as a limited one sided 12” with nothing more than the track title and Steve’s phone number printed on the label. We pressed 100 copies, packaged in a shrink wrapped sleeve and found a distributor in West London to sell them for us. The distributor told his customers that it was an unofficial release by a well known artist and that was that.

A few years later someone posted the track on YouTube, claiming it was by Lil Louise! I listened to it the other day for the first time in a long time, and you know what? It’s a fuckin’ tune!

2. Blue Goose - Spirals / Plink Plonk (1995) 

A wonderful piece of electronica by (the real) Richard Grey. Released in 1995 on Mr C’s Plink Plonk label, layers of clever synth riffs morph over a deep dubby bassline and rolling drum patterns. This never gets old.

3. Baby Ford - Dead Eye / Ifact (1994)

Peter Baby Ford is a phenomenal producer who has been on the scene since the very beginning, Oochy Koochy (1988) is one of the best acid house tracks ever. But for me the first release on his own ifach label is very special. This is techno at it’s very best. A dark, driving, atmospheric groove that takes you to another place.

4. Mr. G - My Father's Farda (G's Sound Boyz Dub) / Phoenix G. (2001)

Another brilliant UK producer, originally one half of the Advent, Mr G produces loop based techno that delivers every time. The track My Fathers Farda always smashes the dance floor. It’s the perfect DJ tool, it builds and builds with just the right amount of everything: percussion, bassline, vocal hook, strings, ride - perfect!

5. Mashupheadz - Ali Baba / Plank (1997)

Matthew B and Nathan Coles join forces to produce this amazing three track EP. Plank was Matthew B’s own breaks label that had a distinctive sound and quality. The track in demand here is Blue Skies, but for me it’s Ali Baba that get’s me every time; Slick basslines, cleverly edited alien vocal stabs and a hypnotic brass hook. Superb drum programming as you would expect from two of London's most talented techousers.
