She remembers when Virginia threw a knife at her, lodging it into the wall right beside Spirit’s ear. How far they’ve come! 

“Our first kiss?” Spirit asks this as if it wasn’t exactly what she was thinking about. Like, What  

They’re tangled up in bed, enjoying the pre-sleep part of the sleepover, when Spirit leans in — and Virginia turns away. Rejection stings, but Spirit backs off, plays it cool.

“What would make it perfect?”

Percy: Oh no, what's going on? Is there a fire, a monster, are we being attacked?

Annabeth: No there is a spider

“I never know what to make of people anymore.” She starts, gently pulling yellowed and dried leaves from the fern she’s been tending to. “I had always grown up and been taught that your community was everything. We were all meant to be family. And then I was introduced to the so-called civilized world and...” Her head shakes, looking less upset about the cruelty of mankind and more sorrowful. “It just seems a shame that progress brought out the worst in people.”

Once the fern was properly pruned, she smiled, letting her eyes close and her hands hover above it— there’s a slight crackle and pop from her fingers, sparks flying before the fern leaves rise up, growing nearly twice their original height. “...I think the plants have the right idea. Easy living. Refusing to speak. Refusing to be at war. Very peaceful, don’t you think?”
