she didn’t want the throne.

she wanted to fight, take down those before her, but she didn’t want the throne. any grub could see that the empire was too broken for her to fix alone, and that meant giving up the throne for something else. she was intelligent, violent, ruthless.

she trained hard, always, fighting who she could and pushing herself too hard, all sharp teeth and sharp angles and stark exhaustion, covered in bruises and scars, claws sharpened, teeth bared. she fought. she trained. she had to be better. she had to be the best, if she wanted anything to be fixed, anyone to be saved, if she wanted to even survive.

the empress would eat her alive otherwise. she didn’t have time to rest.

winning was the only option. it was the only thing she could do.

the fight, when it came, was long, violent, painful. she bled. she ached. her horn shattered and the empress grinned, laughed in her face, threw her to the ground over and over. she struggled to stand again, struggled to breathe. she had to win. her life wasn’t hers, it was the planet’s, her friends’, her race. there was no option other than killing this person in front of her, because everything else was death.

her death, her friends’, her planet’s, her race’s. she needed to survive this. she needed to make the rest of them survive this. she had to win.

she had to live.

she had no other choice.
