after a seemingly endless battle, after facing impossible odds countless times, the hero finally gets their revenge. they kill the monster that had killed their parents, or their clan or their village or the entire world. the final moment of a horrible, drag-out fight, where the righteous hero stops the life of the creature they've been chasing for so long they can't remember who they were when it started finally comes.

and the hero feels nothing.

they look at the corpse, or perhaps the pile of corpses, and they feel nothing at all. they had every right, though, going after the monster. they didn't take it on lightly. they limited bloodshed. so much could be saved by their killing of this monster, so much would be saved. they had, in killing this beast, guaranteed the safety of so many others.

and it doesn't change the way they don't feel. there's no relief. no joy, no celebration, no outpouring of sobbing, pent-up anguished grief. there's been time for that already. the anger had melted into sadness, they'd borrowed joy from the future in their plans for how it would feel to finally put an end to that monster, once and for all, and now they realize that the joy wasn't there to borrow.

not sadness, even realizing they now have to stop being a hero, they stopped the threat, they can rest now. just the hollow realization that even for all the good it did, their motivation was personal, and they'll never get what they wanted.

the ones they loved, the ones they lost, are still gone. will always be gone. they'd stared death in the face and screamed that they wanted their past back, they wanted the dead back and nothing would be enough, besides the monster's head, and realized only when they'd managed to get their trophy that it still wasn't enough.

A major new survey from The Trevor Project released on Wednesday (6 May) has found that transgender and nonbinary young people who wanted hormone therapy but were unable to access it were nearly twice as likely to report a suicide attempt in the past year compared to those currently receiving hormones.

According to the report – which included over 10,000 responses from trans, nonbinary, and genderqueer people – 15% of trans youth denied access to hormones reported a suicide attempt, compared to 8% of those able to receive care.
