I know this and I love you. Leave it to Jay to wrangle her back in from the edge of a cliff with both fists raised and a bit of blood on her lip. Echo’s itching for a fight ( when is she not? ) but it’s the hands guiding her shoulders to follow her partner that have her choose not to be a little shit for once in her life. Jay doesn’t deserve to get involved in her own personal squabbles. If it had been anyone else? Consider them done.

                           first of all, gosh, thank you?? i so appreciate it?? and i’m going to be totally honest, i think?? it worked. because in spite of going home a half hour late, and in spite of how HARD i actually worked since it was cafe and cafe is hard work, it was kind of an AWESOME day? i was super productive, i hit and exceeded the cafe’s goals for pwp and bogos, i got to see a lot of my old regulars and chat with them, had some really really stellar conversations. it was a good day. so thank you! i know your thoughts helped.

and liv? you are so brilliant. your entire HOST of muses, my goodness. the depth, the love, the range you’ve written into them, the way you know them to the core of who they are. i adore your prose. your dialogue is so on point. and you, as a person, are one of the best humans i know. you are kindness and thoughtfulness, and bigheartedness all wrapped up in someone i’m so, so happy to know.

                          There was an immediate look of indignation, bordering on disgust, that this man thought he could insist on anything. His friends calling him dumb and glum was one thing- Caleb Leone insisting he quit ‘whining’ was something else entirely. 

                 “ Ain’t whinin. Ain’t whined ‘bout anyhin in my damn life. I was only sayin, and sayin quietly, might add. If y’got issue with what I was simply pointin out, t’easiest thing t’do is t’not listen to me. Most folk’s’re already on board with that, in these parts. Jump on t’bandwagon, huh? ”

       She twists the ring on her left finger idly like an old friend. Somehow she feels him there even when he’s been gone for days. Hours have turned into years and she’s withered right before her very eyes; a one promised life now shriveled to an eternal purgatory where her heart stays locked tight. Dom has the nerve to ask and she lets out a breathy, humorless laugh, holding a hand up to pause the drink he’s offering her. “It was never yours to know.”

So Echo looks at him ---- really looks at him ---- and shakes her head. “What was I supposed to say? They’ve always taken everything that was ever MINE away from me and you think we’d be okay with removing the precaution of someone findin’ out? He loved me and I loved him. No one can take that promise from us.” Swallowing thick, she nods to herself with a vacant smile. (And no one ever would. )

when a plate breaks

      “Hi,” Dash gasps into the receiver. Cleo picks up on the second ring, but it isn’t soon enough. “I was–” His breath comes in short, shallow bursts, audible as a rattle and a wheeze. “I was driving. Home.” He’d been a guest lecturer for a Harvard series over the past four days, his longest stretch away from home since Rowan’s birth three months prior. In fact, it’s his first time back to work. Not an altogether conservative return to business.

He swallows. “It’s late, so late, too– late, but I was driving home and– behind me. Behind– me, I thought– I–” His breath quickens, heart pounding in his chest. There’s a sudden tightness just left of center that has a pained groan spilling into Cleo’s ear. “I forgot my meds,” Dashiel rasps. “I was so– distracted– leaving. And when– when I realized, I didn’t want– to worry you. I thought I’d be– good, I’ve been so– good. Since. Fuck.” He curls forward until his head hits the steering wheel, shutting his eyes against the flash of hazard lights. The hand not clutching his phone clutches his chest, and he dissolves into a fit of profoundly panicked sobs.

not a victory march

Jade steps from the bathroom to the bedroom, massaging lotion into her aching hands and suppressing a yawn so violent she’s forced to pinch her lips closed with her teeth. Keegan sits propped against their bed’s headboard, still in his bluejeans and polo shirt, obviously having intended to wait for Jade to finish in the bathroom so he could take a shower, but now very much asleep. His chin has collapsed against his chest, arms gone slack even folded as they are over his torso. The closer Jade gets, the more exhausted he looks. The buttons on his polo are undone. His undershirt sticks out beyond his hemline since he’d neglected to tuck it in. He smells strongly of disinfectant, and faintly of formaldehyde. There’s a hole in his sock.

      “Kee,” Jade says gently. She drags her index finger up the arch of his foot and watches his reflexes engage; waits for him to stir. “Keegan, go shower. You smell like the morgue.” They’ve both just come off of a thirty hour shift. They’d found each other once for a nap around hour fifteen, and though Jade had slept since then, and has now bathed, she can’t speak for Keegan. “Kee, seriously. It’s worth showerin’ now. You’ll thank me lat--”

But their doorbell rings. Jade starts and looks with mild horror at the pager she’d abandoned on her nightstand before she recognizes the sound for what it is and furrows her brow. “Should we pretend we’re still at work?” she asks dryly.
