been rereading the andalite chronicles.. what a trilogy
When Elfangor last saw him, Arbron was a free Taxxon. When Jake first met him, Arbron was a free Taxxon. Do you think he ever got infested in between those times?
Definitely. As Arbron tells Jake in #53: "Resistance always breaks down, and we fall again under Yeerk sway. They feed us, you see. It's as simple as that."
There's a brutal logic to that, one it's impossible to argue with.
I always get sad when the Taxxons' irresistible cannibalism gets called evil in Animorphs. I can't remember if this ever gets lampshaded in the text (it certainly does in the subtext), but their cannibalism is so clearly a symptom of their species being a victim of their own biology. It's almost like calling the Yeerks evil simply for wanting to be able to experience life outside of a kandrona pool, only worse since the Taxxons literally can't help it.
Speaking of which, I was researching earlier if I remembered right that Arbron was nothlit-ed as a Taxxon, and it autocorrected to Taco, which honestly would have been a much better fate.
I was trying to fall asleep, as one does when it is sleep time, when a great mystery revealed itself to me. Behold. “Tom proceeded to explain his penetration of a Taxxon alliance with the Animorphs. The Taxxon, straining to form coherent speech with its inadequate mouthparts, confirmed the tale.” -Book 53, pg 122
We learn just a little bit later this Taxxon is actually The Marvelous Bird Boy in morph. So that brings up two questions.
First, did Tobias try to speak English with his Taxxon morph, or did he learn Taxxonese? (We know Taxxons struggle with Galard, so I assume it’s one of these other two languages.)
Second, if Tobias learned Taxxonese, where did he learn it? It’s not likely Ax knows any of the language, and none of the other Animorphs do. Did Tobias spend time with Arbron in the day and night proceeding this? My heart says yes. Tobias got to spend some time with one of the people who knew his father, and learned some Taxxonese to help with the mission.
Ok, now I will try to sleep again.
<You’ll lose,> I said.
<We know,> Arbron said. <But even a Taxxon has a right to control its own planet. Even a Taxxon has a right to resist an invader.> - Elfangor and Arbron (The Andalite Chronicles, Animorphs Series)
“I have been a leader of these, my new people, for many years. We have fought the hunger, resisted as well as we could the murderous cannibalistic urges. I've tried to show them a better way. But the need is too powerful. Resistance always breaks down, and we fall again under Yeerk sway. They feed us, you see. It's as simple as that.
I know that...I understand the morphing technology. I know it cannot save me, that I am forever trapped. But it can save my people. And if they are saved I can lay down my burden of leadership.”
- Arbron, Book #53: The Answer, pg. 58 (by K.A. Applegate)

SEND ME A CHARACTER

My first would always be Marco but I think we know your feelings on our good boy. So… Arbron?
Sexuality Headcanon: Most Andalites I write are bi (and they also don’t really have a concept of gendered sexuality), and that includes Arbron. Gender Headcanon: I guess I just headcanon him as male? I don’t recall any point in canon that indicated he wasn’t comfortable with his gender. Considering Andalite tech capabilities, he could certainly be trans, but I’ve never had a reason to write Arbron in depth, so I don’t really have a headcanon vis a vis whether he’s trans. I do think an interesting thought is what sort of genders Taxxons have, and how that shook out for him. I think it would be really intriguing if Taxxons had role/job-based genders, and I could easily see that being at odds with Arbron’s sense of self. Not that being a Taxxon, period, wouldn’t be a horrific challenge, but I’ve never really thought of the implications of what if he landed on a Taxxon gender that isn’t equivalent to male. Arbron is interesting and I wish he hadn’t been arbitrarily killed as a bit of flavor text so I could use him in my fanfic. A ship I have with said character: I don’t ship Arbron/Elfangor, although I think a case could be made that Elfangor had a crush on him, I wouldn’t think it was reciprocated. We never saw Arbron with any other characters it would make sense to ship him with. That said, I can get creative and say: Wouldn’t Arbron/Chapman be an interesting crackship? A BROTP I have with said character: Arbron and Elfangor A NOTP I have with said character: Arbron/Taxxons? I mean he probably went there, but I’m not going to write it. A random headcanon: Arbron is the first person in his family to join the military. His family have been entertainers and artists for generations. They aren’t necessarily anti-military dissidents, but they are the sort who would rather stay out of the conflict and ride it out. After a decade of the Yeerk War, this position came to be seen as dishonorable, and Arbron feels like he has something to prove as a warrior. General Opinion over said character: I like Arbron a lot! He sort of fills the Marco role in The Andalite Chronicles, and of course I’m intrigued by Andalite humor. He’s informed a lot of the way I write Andalites who are funny. And like I said above, he’s one of those characters (like the Auxiliaries and that cool scientist from #18) who I wish hadn’t been killed off so I could work with them in my post-war writing.
