I probably should stop being so obsessed with early vs late Animorphs, but it's so weird to see Jake CONSTANTLY putting shit up to votes early on.

Animorphs is great because it's some of the best popular fiction ever written about survival and ethical dilemmas and the horrors of war, but also sometimes you can Really Tell that they're written for an audience on the younger side of middle grade, especially in how long they assume the reader's attention span/short term memory is

a true transgenerational media warrior thinks not of such trivialities, of course, but Elfangor, dude, we know what a Skrit Na is, you described them a couple of chapters ago. You don't need to repeat the same description word for word again.

This is to say though, if you're a "hasn't finished a book since high school" type who wants to retrain yourself to read recreationally again, Animorphs has it for you. No shame in reading middle grade as an adult especially if it's good middle grade

Animorphs Re-Read

How it started:

My name is Jake. That's my first name obviously. I can't tell you my last name. It would be too dangerous. The Controllers are everywhere. Everywhere. And if they knew my full name, they could find me and my friends, and then... well, let's just say I don't want them to find me.

How it's going:

My name is Jake. My name is Jake Berenson. The days of secrecy, of lurking in the shadows, are over. The Yeerks know my name. They know my height, weight, eye color. Social Security number, and favorite foods. At long last they know the word Animorph...They know it all now, the Yeerks do. All our names. All our deeds.

I plan to start a re-read of the Animorphs series for the first time in about 10 years. Since I’m sure there are plenty of things I won’t remember, I’ll be sharing my thoughts here. Wish me luck.

I really think a lot about how Jake wasn’t responsible before the war. He was a reckless idiot, who did things like cross abandoned construction sites, and climb cranes. And then he’s thrust into a position of leadership and has to grow up quick.
