So What is an ARC Reviewer?
I’ve been making an effort to find ARC reviewers lately, and I have been getting a lot of questions about how it works. So here is the low down on ARCs.
ARC stands for Advance Review Copy. In traditional publishing copies of books are printed in advance of the books release and distributed to professional reviewers, and in recent times, also to bloggers who will then write reviews to increase exposure and interest.
Independent authors (like me) often do this on their own. (Usually ebooks are offered, not paper books)
I don’t have many followers, so you probably don’t want me.
But I do! I am an unknown releasing my first few books, and every review matters to me. There’s a saying in independent publishing, that going from zero to ten reviews is harder than going from ten to a hundred. Right now I’m in the zero to ten zone, and every single review is a massive help to the visibility of my books.
Especially if you can leave reviews on sales platforms such as Amazon or Barnes and Noble, or review sites like Goodreads.
But wait, isn’t that against Amazon’s TOS?
This question took me by surprise because ARCs are such a massive tradition in the publishing industry, so I did some research.
Amazon forbids the supply of products for free in exchange for reviews. Except books. Yup. They made a specific exception for books. The caveat is that you cannot be required to write an Amazon review. Which I totally don’t. I’m happy if you leave a review anywhere.
So no, you’re not breaking any rules by accepting and ARC and then leaving a review of it on Amazon.
I’m not a very good Beta.
This is not a beta read. I have other people, close writing friends, and a paid editor who take care of that for me.
What you will receive is a finished ebook copy of a book that is publication ready, and I’m not expecting any sort of in depth critique. Just a reader review.
That said, if you notice typos or wonky formatting and you’d like to let me know directly I would appreciate that so much.
I never know what to say in reviews.
I too tend to choke when I write a review. I’m sure you already know that it’s perfectly fine to leave one sentence saying ‘I liked it’ or ‘kinda dull in the middle but a decent read.’
But you want to say more than that?
My favorite character/part was ____ because of …
My least favorite character/part was ____ because of…
I liked/disliked this story because…
What if I don’t like the book or can’t finish it?
If you don’t like the book, say so! You are leaving an honest review, and if the truth is that you got bored or just didn’t enjoy the book that’s a reveiw that needs to be written. And I don’t know about you, but I mostly read the middling reviews when I’m trying to decide on a book, so leaving a less favorable review might be the most helpful for other readers.
That said, I’m assuming that you do generally enjoy the genre of a book if you’re requesting an ARC.
