It’s quiet in the expansive kitchen at Kiramman House as you hum to yourself under your breath, stirring the pot on the stove every now and then. The delicious smell of garlic and fresh vegetables wafts through the kitchen, and you admire the soup simmering on the stove proudly. You’re not exactly the world’s greatest cook, but you do know how to make a pretty good chicken noodle soup. And since your girlfriend Caitlyn had woken up with a cold, you figure it’s time to put your skills to good use.
You aren’t surprised Caitlyn’s sick, although you wish she would have just listened to you earlier when you warned her she was working herself far too hard. Things have been more tense than ever between Piltover and Zaun lately, and Caitlyn’s role as Commander has her worn extremely thin. It doesn’t help that Ambessa keeps hanging around, questioning her decisions and making her second-guess herself. You knew Caitlyn couldn’t keep burning the candle at both ends forever, and so when your girlfriend had woken up congested, with a sore throat and a pounding headache, you made her promise to stay in bed and actually get some rest.
While Caitlyn napped – a rarity, for her – you slipped out of bed and got started on some soup. It’s almost ready now, and you figure you’ll bring it to your girlfriend in bed and try to coax her into eating a little, and see what else she needs.
You’ve just turned the stove off and are getting a bowl out of the cupboard when you hear someone shuffle into the kitchen. You turn to see Caitlyn come into the kitchen dressed in her favorite navy blue nightgown and matching robe, paired with fluffy slippers. She’s rubbing her very pink nose with her fist, looking adorably sleep-rumpled and distinctly exhausted.
“Honey, what are you doing up?” you chide gently, putting down the bowl with a frown. You come over to Caitlyn and get on your tiptoes to press a kiss to her warm forehead. “I was going to bring you some soup in bed.”
“I wondered where you were,” Caitlyn says, her voice croaky with congestion. She sniffles, pulling out a handkerchief from the pocket of her robe and dabbing at her nose. “And I thought I might try to get a little work done.”
“No way, sweetheart,” you shake your head, gently guiding Caitlyn to take a seat at the kitchen table. “Your only work for the next few days is getting better.”
“But I have so much to do –” Caitlyn protests, then takes a breath and snaps forward into her handkerchief with a rough sneeze, quickly followed by another. “Ugh. Excuse me.”
“Bless you,” you hum sympathetically, kissing her forehead again. “Cait, working yourself to death is how you ended up this sick in the first place. You need to actually take some time to rest. I’m sure your second-in-command can handle things just fine until you’re better.”
“I’m not sure I share your confidence,” Caitlyn mumbles, but evidently she’s too exhausted to argue with you. She sniffles, looking hopefully toward the stove. “Did you make soup?”
“Yeah, honey,” you smile, heading over to the pot and ladling out a bowl of soup for her. “Chicken noodle, is that okay?”
“I love chicken noodle,” Caitlyn says, before sneezing again. “Excuse me. Sorry, I’ve been doing that all morning,” she laments, blowing her nose.
You chuckle fondly, bringing the soup over to her at the table, along with a spoon. “Bless you again. It’s called being sick, Cait. But maybe some soup will help you feel better. It should help your sore throat, at least.”
“You’re too sweet to me,” Caitlyn murmurs, taking a small sip of soup. She sighs in satisfaction. “Oh, this is delicious. Thank you, darling.”
“Anytime.” You smile, watching Caitlyn eat her soup. She looks so unusually vulnerable like this, out of her uniform and in her pajamas in the middle of the day, saddled with a miserable cold. It makes you feel extra protective of her, and you’re glad you get to take care of her, even if you do wish she would just be more reasonable with her work schedule in the first place.
After Caitlyn finishes her soup, you put the leftovers away and start washing dishes. Caitlyn joins you by the sink, wrapping her arms around you from behind and nuzzling her face into your shoulder. You can feel heat radiating off your girlfriend and you frown, turning to kiss her cheek.
“Why don’t you go get back in bed, honey?” you suggest, setting aside the clean pot. “You’re a little warm, I think you’re running a fever.”
“Mm, but you’re warm,” Caitlyn hums, tightening her arms around you. You laugh softly, endeared by your girlfriend being unusually clingy. Caitlyn holds you close, all but hanging off your back with her face still buried in your neck. You enjoy the moment of softness between the two of you, slowly soaping up the dirty bowl in your hands. Then the moment is unceremoniously broken when Caitlyn suddenly sneezes into your shoulder.
“Oh goodness, sorry, darling,” Caitlyn pulls back, grimacing and shooting you an apologetic look. “I didn’t feel that one coming.”
“It’s fine sweetheart, bless you,” you chuckle, turning off the tap and putting down the sponge you were using. You dry your hands and turn in Caitlyn’s arms so you’re facing her. You reach a hand up to her cheek, smoothing a thumb over her jaw, gazing at her lovingly. “Will you get in bed if I come with you?”
“I suppose…” Caitlyn straightens up, pouting slightly. “You really aren’t going to let me do even a little work? I have plenty of paperwork to do.”
“Nope.” You reach for her forehead and gently rest the back of your hand against it. There’s definitely a feverish warmth there. “Not until this fever breaks, at least.”
“I can work with a bit of fever,” Caitlyn argues, her ocean-blue eyes shimmering with determination. “I certainly have before.”
“Mhm, and what would you say to me if I wanted to work when I was sick?”
Caitlyn huffs. “That’s different. You’re you, and it’s my job to look after you.”
“And I take care of you,” you remind your girlfriend patiently, pressing a quick kiss to her lips. “Enough arguing. Bed, c’mon.” You lace your fingers together and gently tug her in the direction of the bedrooms.
Soon enough, you get Caitlyn tucked back in bed, covered warmly with a quilt. You sit on the side of the bed, stroking her hair gently, looking down at her with a fond smile.
“How’re you feeling?” you ask softly, a hint of a frown creasing your eyebrows. “Can I get you anything?”
“I’ve felt worse,” Caitlyn says, eyes fluttering closed as you continue to brush your hands through her navy hair. She loves it when you stroke her hair, you learned this early on in your relationship.
“You’ve also felt better,” you point out, and Caitlyn hums quietly in acknowledgement. You can tell she’s on the verge of drifting off to sleep, which she definitely needs, but there’s something you want to do first.
“Let me get your temperature before you fall asleep, Cait,” you murmur, grabbing the thermometer on the bedside table. Caitlyn gives you a slightly wary look but nevertheless allows you to slip the glass thermometer in her mouth. While it works, you keep stroking her hair, your heart filled with love for the woman in front of you.
When it’s been three minutes, you check the thermometer. “Definitely a fever,” you frown, putting the device aside with a small sigh. “You need to rest up.”
Caitlyn nods, looking up at you through heavy-lidded eyes. There’s an unusual sort of hesitation in her gaze. “Will you lay with me?” she asks quietly.
“Of course I will.” You immediately join her in bed, sliding under the covers and spooning her from behind. “I’ve got you,” you murmur, gathering her up in your arms and pressing your lips to the warm skin at the back of her neck. “Just rest now, honey.”
“Thank you” Caitlyn mumbles, her voice already rounded with sleepiness, and you feel her sink deeper into your arms.
You hold your girlfriend close the rest of the day while she sleeps off her cold.

Sevika has never been a light sleeper. She spent her childhood in thin-walled flats that did nothing to conceal the clamor of the undercity. She’s long-since learned how to tune it all out, how to sleep through the tram thundering over tracks above, making the walls rattle, or the petty fights neighbors have at all hours of the day. Suffice to say, she does not wake easily.
Except for when it comes to Mel.
The moment that Mel gasps awake next to her, Sevika’s eyes snap open instinctively. It’s odd how in tune she is with Mel. How the slightest shift in Mel’s breathing, even just a pained mumble in her sleep can wake Sevika instantly. It’s as though the two of them are connected by some invisible thread, keeping Sevika constantly attuned to Mel’s wellbeing.
And on a night like tonight, when Mel’s been sick and clingy, resting too warmly in her arms, she’s even more on alert than usual.
“Shh, hey, you’re okay,” Sevika murmurs, blinking herself awake and propping herself up on an elbow so she can get a better look at her. Mel’s chest is heaving, her breath tight and short, and a couple of tears are slipping down her smooth cheeks.
“V-Vika?” Mel stutters, her green eyes wide, as if she isn’t quite sure where she is. She lets out a rattling cough into the blankets that makes Sevika’s own chest ache in sympathy.
“Yeah, baby, I’m right here,” Sevika soothes, reaching over and switching on the lap on the nightstand. Soft, warm light spills over the bed, highlighting Mel’s flushed face and teary eyes. Sevika’s heart clenches slightly. She hates seeing Mel like this, so worn out and unusually vulnerable. It makes the usual protectiveness she feels over Mel ratchet up several notches. Mel coughs again, and Sevika hands her a glass of water.
“Here, doll – let’s get you sitting up a bit, hm?” Sevika helps Mel sit upright with a strong arm around her shoulders, propping a few pillows behind her. Mel sips at the water, her hand shaky slightly on the glass.
“You’re okay,” Sevika murmurs, taking the glass from Mel when she’s finished and pulling her close. Mel’s head dips to rest on Sevika’s shoulder, her body curling into her, and Sevika starts rubbing her back in smooth, rhythmic circles. “I’m right here, baby. You’re okay.”
Mel sniffles thickly, her tears slowing. Sevika wipes her cheeks dry with the cuff of her sleeves, endlessly gentle.
“I’m sorry –” Mel says shakily, rubbing at her eyes and straightening a little. “Goodness.”
Sevika keeps her tucked close. “You’re fine. Don’t apologize.” She brushes a hand over Mel’s curls, then kisses the crown of her head gently. “Nightmare?”
“Mhm,” Mel snuggles in closer to Sevika, letting out a low, congested breath. “My mother.”
Sevika nods, her grip tightening around the woman in her arms. It’s not the first nightmare Mel has had about Ambessa, and probably won’t be the last. If Ambessa were still alive, Sevika would have more than a few things she’d like to say to her. Or, that her fists would say, more likely.
“I’m sorry,” Sevika murmurs, blessing Mel when she curls into her shoulder for a shivery sneeze. She hands her a handkerchief, kissing her hair again. “How you feeling?”
Mel blows her nose, sounding miserable. She glances up at Sevika with a wry look. “Need you ask?”
Sevika chuckles, rubbing her shoulder warmly. “No, guess not.” She reaches up to touch the backs of her fingers to Mel’s cheek. “You’re still running hot, baby.”
“That would explain the headache,” Mel mumbles, pressing her fingers to her eyes.
“Stay here,” Sevika brushes her lips against Mel’s warm forehead, then helps her settle back into the pillows and pulls the covers back over her shoulders. “Be right back.”
Mel sinks into the bed with another small cough, nothing but a lump under the blankets. Sevika finds herself not wanting to leave, even if it’s just for a moment. She just wants to be glued to Mel’s side when she’s down for the count like this.
But the necessity of making sure Mel is taken care of takes precedence. Sevika heads over to the bathroom, where she fills a fresh glass of water, wets a washcloth, and grabs the bottle of medicine off the counter.
Back in the bedroom, Sevika sits down on Mel’s side of the bed, resting a gentle hand on her warm cheek.
“Hey, baby. Think you can take some more meds for me?” Her voice is soft – gentle in a way that she only ever is with Mel. She shakes two pills out of the bottle and offers them. Mel pushes herself upright with a small groan, and Sevika steadies her with a hand on her back.
After Mel swallows down the pills, Sevika climbs back in bed next to her and lays the cool washcloth on Mel’s forehead. She wraps her arm around Mel, shifting so that Mel can rest against her chest, held warmly against her side.
“Thank you, Vika,” Mel murmurs, snuggling up to her with a contented sigh.
“Always, sweet girl.” Sevika nuzzles her nose into the sweet, floral scent of Mel’s curls. “Rest now.”
Mel drifts off into a peaceful slumber, held securely in Sevika’s arms.

Long before they got married, Vi learned early on that taking care of Caitlyn is a delicate dance. Caitlyn has little patience for physical weakness in herself. When it comes to Vi, she is absolutely adoring and patient anytime she is the slightest bit unwell, hardly leaving her side. And yet when it comes to herself, Caitlyn is reluctant to accept any form of what she deems ‘fussing’.
It’s all about finding the sweet spot, Vi knows. Push too hard and Caitlyn becomes withdrawn and stubborn, doubling down on her work and insisting she’s fine. But don’t push enough, and Caitlyn will absolutely run herself into the ground, until she’s bedridden and ten times worse off than she would have been if she just rested in the first place.
Luckily, Vi is just the woman for the job.
She’s not quite sure what’s bothering Caitlyn tonight, but she does have a hunch. They’re in their master bathroom getting ready for a Valentine’s Day date that Caitlyn has been excited about for weeks. She made reservations for them at an up-and-coming Italian spot downtown that apparently all her colleagues have been raving about. Vi doesn’t really need the fancy food, but she’s happy to go on a date anywhere with her beautiful wife.
However, she knows something is off for a couple of reasons. She watches Caitlyn meticulously applying her lipstick, leaning into the mirror. First, she’s pale, even with her flawless foundation and expertly applied blush. Second, she’s wearing her glasses instead of her contacts, which she only does when she’s tired or getting a headache.
So Vi knows something’s up. Getting Caitlyn to admit it? That’s the hard part.
She comes over to her wife and places a hand on her back, admiring the expanse of smooth skin showing in the slinky, low-back black dress Cailtyn’s put on. “You look gorgeous,” Vi murmurs. “Are you feeling okay?”
“Mhm, fine,” Caitlyn says distractedly, capping her lipstick and grabbing her setting spray.
Vi leans against the counter casually. “You’re wearing your glasses,” she observes. Not that she minds, Caitlyn somehow manages to look even more hot in her black-rimmed glasses, which shouldn't be possible.
“My eyes are dry,” Caitlyn answers, shooting Vi a wary glance. “Don’t start, love.”
Vi holds up her hands. “Just checking! Cause, you know, if you don’t feel good you can tell me.”
Caitlyn turns to give her a kiss. “Yes, and I would, if there were anything to tell,” she promises, wiping her lipstick off Vi’s lips with her thumb. “But I’m fine. Are you ready? We should probably head out, the reservation is for seven.”
Vi decides to drop the subject for now, but she’ll keep a close eye on her wife.
. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁
The restaurant is nice, Vi has to admit. It’s cozy and intimate, a small establishment with only a few tables. Crisp white linen tablecloths drape over the tables, which are set with softly flickering candles and antique-looking dinnerware.
They’re ushered to a table immediately, which has a stunning view of the waterfront through floor to ceiling windows. Vi smiles to herself, knowing Caitlyn probably requested this table specifically so they could have the best view. Her wife never does anything halfway, and it’s one of the things she loves most about her (and it only drives her crazy occasionally).
“This is a beautiful place, I can see why everyone was talking about it,” Vi says, once they’re settled at the table. She reaches across the table to softly caress her wife’s hand.
“I’m glad you like it,” Caitlyn murmurs, her eyes glimmering a soft azure in the flickering candlelight. “I feel like we haven’t been on a proper date in ages.”
“Mm, it has been awhile,” Vi agrees, absently running her thumb across the back of Caitlyn’s hand. Between her work at the boxing gym she owns, and Caitlyn’s career, things have felt extra busy lately. She makes a silent resolve to enjoy this night, mind already drifting to what they might get up to later.
Their server arrives, and Caitlyn orders a chardonnay for them both, and they decide on a couple appetizers. After he leaves though, Vi notices Caitlyn press two fingers to her right temple, rubbing with a faint wince. Vi knows her wife well enough to easily recognize one of her tells of an oncoming headache, confirming her earlier suspicions.
She frowns, reaching across the table for her hand again. “Getting a headache, sweetheart?” she says gently, concern knitting her eyebrows.
Caitlyn drops her hand from her temple immediately, looking sheepish. “No, I’m fine, love.”
“Cait…” Vi sighs, giving her an imploring look. Caitlyn is prone to migraines, and Vi really would like to catch this headache before it gets worse.
“It’s Valentine’s Day, and I want to enjoy our date,” Caitlyn says stubbornly. “I promise, I’m alright, Violet. Can we just enjoy the evening?”
Vi lets out another heavy breath, feeling mildly frustrated. But she knows how important tonight is for her wife, so she decides to leave it for now. When they get home, Vi will get her to take some medicine and tell her how she’s really feeling.
. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁
However, as the night wears on, it becomes increasingly clear that Caitlyn is not feeling well at all.
Vi can tell she’s doing her best to power through it, for the sake of the date, but she can see the exhaustion seeping into her wife’s posture, and the tightness in her eyes.
Their entrees arrive, a perfectly cooked steak for Vi and a frutti di mare pasta for Caitlyn, but her wife just picks at the food, clearly uninterested.
Eventually, Vi decides she’s had enough of the charade, and she puts down her knife and fork, fixing Caitlyn with a level look.
“You’ve barely touched your food, Cait” she says, her tone gentle but also pointed.
Caitlyn, her face pale and drawn, looks like she’s torn between admitting the truth, and pretending she’s fine, but Vi just raises her eyebrows at her. She’s had enough of this dance.
After a beat Caitlyn sighs, face falling. “My stomach is a little off,” she admits with a small wince.
Vi reaches over to trace soothing patterns on the back of her hand, encouraging her to continue. “Just your stomach, sweetheart?”
“I think I’m getting a migraine,” Caitlyn exhales, pouting a little. She rubs at her temple with her free hand. “It’s terrible timing. I’m sorry darling.”
“Hey, none of that, it’s not your fault,” Vi squeezes her hand, then raises a finger to signal their server. “Let’s get you home.”
“But what about our date?”
“Our date can wait, baby. You’re much more important, and you need to take your meds before it gets any worse,” Vi says firmly.
She silently kicks herself for not being more persistent when she noticed the signs of Caitlyn getting a headache before, but the best thing she can do now is get her wife home as soon as possible, before the migraine really ramps up.
By the time she’s paid and helped Caitlyn back to the car, she can tell the headache is getting much worse. Caitlyn has gone quiet and white as a sheet, curling in her seat to press her forehead against the car window.
Vi eases the car out of the parking lot, silently cursing the speed bumps. “Scale of one to ten?” she asks quietly, glancing over at her wife.
“Six and a half,” Caitlyn mumbles, not moving. Vi’s chest clenches in worry. Caitlyn’s six on the pain scale is a normal person’s nine, she knows.
Vi nods. “I’ll get you home as soon as I can, baby,” she promises.
. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁
When they get home, Vi guides Caitlyn to the bedroom with an arm wrapped protectively around her waist. She only flips on a couple of lights, just enough to see well enough to not trip over anything, but keeping everything as dim as possible for her wife.
In the bedroom, she leads Caitlyn to sit down on the edge of bed. Her wife bends forward, clutching her head in her hands, and Vi wishes more than anything she could take the pain herself. She hates seeing Caitlyn in so much pain like this, migraines are one of the few things that well and truly knocks her wife off her feet, leaving her completely bedridden and miserable.
Vi quickly grabs Caitlyn’s migraine and nausea meds from the bathroom, and fills a cup with water. She shakes out a pill from each bottle and gently places them in Caitlyn’s palm. “Meds, sweetheart,” she murmurs as quietly as possible, handing over the water. “Then you can get in bed.”
“Could you get my pajamas please?” Caitlyn whispers miserably.
“Of course,” Vi kisses her forehead tenderly. “Be right back, cupcake.”
She helps Caitlyn get changed into her softest silk pajamas, and also puts a bucket by the bed in case her wife’s nausea worsens. After Caitlyn is tucked under the covers, Vi heads to their bathroom to grab the pack of makeup removal wipes that Caitlyn keeps in the drawer there.
“Want me to take off your makeup for you, honey?” she asks gently when she returns, settling on the edge of the bed next to her wife. Caitlyn nods slightly, and Vi takes a wipe out of the pack, softly running it over her face and carefully removing the makeup. She frowns when she gets it all off, truly seeing how pale Caitlyn looks without the foundation.
“All done,” Vi murmurs, brushing her lips over her wife’s forehead. “Be right back,” she says, getting up to head into the kitchen to retrieve the eye mask they keep in the freezer.
“Ice – yes, no?” she asks Caitlyn when she returns. She knows simple questions are easier for her wife to process when she’s feeling like this.
“Yes,” Caitlyn murmurs. “Thank you darling.”
Even when she’s feeling absolutely awful, her wife is still polite, Vi notes with exasperated fondness. She smoothes the eye mask over Caitlyn’s face, adjusting it so it won’t fall off. She’s pleased when she sees a little of the tension ease in her wife’s expression.
“Anything else I can get you baby?”
“Just you, Vi.”
Vi strips quickly until she’s just in her tee and boyshorts, and slides into bed next to Caitlyn. She curls an arm around her wife so that she can rest her head on her chest. Caitlyn sighs, relaxing. Vi presses her lips to the top of her hair, breathing in the familiar vanilla scent. Her fingers drop to her hair, scratching gently at her scalp.
“I love you,” she breathes, and her heart aches with it. “Feel better, sweetheart.”
“I love you,” Caitlyn snuggles closer to her. “Thank you for taking care of me.”
. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁
Caitlyn wakes feeling like her head is being squeezed in a vice. God, she hates migraines. They leave her feeling so completely useless and muddled, and tonight's no exception. She remembers the lovely date she had planned, and even the negligee she had picked up for tonight specifically, and moans quietly. So much for a fun Valentine’s Day for her and her wife.
“Baby? You awake?” Vi whispers, and Caitlyn turns her head to face her, cracking her eyes open and squinting immediately against the dim light.
“Mhm,” Caitlyn mumbles, fighting down the wave of nausea that rolls in her stomach from talking and moving.
“The same, worse, or better?” Vi asks, starting to scratch at her scalp again. The sensation of her fingernails on her scalp is wonderful, and Caitlyn sinks into her hand gratefully.
“Mm…same,” Caitlyn says, although she can’t really be sure. Migraines always make her head feel fuzzy and her thoughts slow, like her brain has been dipped in molasses.
Vi makes a sad noise at that, continuing to rub her scalp. “I’m gonna get you some Liquid IV, you need to stay hydrated, okay sweetheart?”
Caitlyn nods, her head throbbing painfully at the movement. She feels Vi kiss her forehead gently, then carefully extricate herself from the bed, trying not to jostle Caitlyn too much.
When she returns, Vi helps Caitlyn shuffle up in bed against the pillows to be a little more upright, Caitlyn thankful for her wife’s strength in times like this when she’s feeling so weak.
Vi holds the glass while Caitlyn takes a few tentative sips of the lemon-flavored drink, trying not to make a face. She’s not really a fan of the electrolyte drink, but it’s one of the few things that will truly hydrate her when she’s got a migraine, and her doctor had recommended it to help ease her symptoms.
Soon though, her stomach starts twisting uncomfortably, and she feels a wave of nausea in her throat, so she pushes the glass away, groaning slightly.
“Nauseous?” Vi asks, setting the drink aside, and Caitlyn gives a small nod in lieu of answering, not trusting her stomach enough to open her mouth.
A second wave of nausea hits, stronger than the first, and she hastily throws back the covers, ignoring the sharp stab of pain in her head as she clambors out of bed.
Vi’s got a hand around her waist immediately, already knowing what’s about to happen. She supports Caitlyn as they quickly make their way to the bathroom, and Caitlyn falls to her knees in front of the toilet.
She feels Vi sweeping her hair back from her face with one hand, the other on her back, as she heaves and gags into the toilet. Tears well in her eyes and course down her cheeks as she throws up. This is the part of migraines she hates the most. The pain is terrible, yes, but she absolutely despises throwing up.
Eventually, her stomach stops contracting and she coughs one final time, slumping forward to lay her head on the toilet seat. Normally she’d be too grossed out to do such a thing, but she is far past the point of caring. Her head is pounding, the dim light in the bathroom feels like a floodlight even through her closed eyes, and her entire body aches painfully.
A sob escapes her lips and she feels more tears run down her cheeks. She hates this so much.
“Oh, sweetheart,” Vi’s voice is dripping with concern and tenderness, and it makes Caitlyn cry harder, because she feels so needy and helpless like this, so unlike herself.
“Come here, honey, come here,” Vi soothes, pulling Caitlyn against her chest and into her lap. They’re on the floor of the bathroom, Vi leaning against the wall, and Caitlyn curled in her lap, feeling as miserable as she can ever imagine feeling.
“I’m so sorry,” Vi murmurs, rubbing a hand in large, warm circles on Caitlyn’s back. “I know this is awful. It’ll be over soon, baby, I promise. I’m right here, you’re okay.”
Caitlyn buries her face in Vi’s chest, knowing she’s probably getting her shirt wet with tears, but she doesn’t care. Vi is so solid, so steady beneath her, and it feels like she’s the only thing holding Caitlyn together.
“Shh, shh,” Vi holds her close, her head tucked protectively over Caitlyn’s where it’s buried in her chest, soothing circles never stopping. “I know, I know, sweetheart. I’m sorry.”
Caitlyn hates how weak migraines make her, and how much throwing up rattles her. But even as she cries, she’s so grateful for her wife, who never wavers, never leaves.
Eventually her sobs quieten, and she stays curled up in Vi’s arms, utterly exhausted and boneless. The crying leaves her head feeling congested and stuffy, increasing the pressure from her already awful migraine. She whines a little at the pain, and Vi tightens her hold on her.
“How about we get you back in bed, sweetheart,” Vi says softly, running a hand up and down Caitlyn’s back.
Caitlyn nods into her chest, and Vi scoops her up easily into her arms, carrying her back to the bed and gently laying her down tenderly. She brings the covers back up over her, and kisses her cheek. Then she moves away and Caitlyn makes an unhappy noise.
“I’ll be right back baby, I promise,” Vi kisses her again, smoothing some hair back from her face. “Just gonna get you a couple things, okay?”
Caitlyn nods, curling up in bed, squeezing her eyes shut and wondering when the pain will end.
In a little while the mattress dips as Vi returns, sitting next to her. “I got a cool washcloth for your face honey, can you turn over a little?” she asks quietly, hand on Caitlyn’s shoulder.
Caitlyn turns to face her, cracking her eyes open to see Vi frowning down at her with a look of tender concern.
“There’s my beautiful girl,” Vi smiles softly, but her eyes are sad. She gently runs the washcloth over Caitlyn’s face, cleaning up some of the clammy sweat beaded there, and then folds it and lays it on her forehead. Caitlyn’s eyes close immediately at the soothing cool touch, sighing gratefully.
“We’ll try some fluids again in a little bit,” Vi murmurs, running her thumb lightly over Caitlyn’s jaw. “And I’ll give you your next dose of meds as soon as it’s time, promise. For now, just rest, sweetheart.”
Caitlyn blindly reaches out until she finds Vi’s hand, clasping it in her own. “Lay with me,” she mumbles croakily.
“Where else did you think I was gonna be, baby?” Vi chuckles quietly, but Caitlyn can tell her voice is fond. Vi gently eases herself down into the bed next to her, wrapping her arms around Caitlyn, who nestles her head in the crook of her arm and tangles their legs together.
Vi hums a tune softly, whisper-quiet, her voice smooth and melodic. Caitlyn feels herself relaxing into her, her mind slowing, her tension ebbing away.
She drifts asleep in her wife’s arms with a lullaby wrapping her in love.

Sevika has never been a fan of words. In fact, words are her least favorite form of communication. They’re too easily twisted and fabricated, too full of lies and deception. She doesn’t trust words. She trusts action, and what she can see with her own damn eyes.
No, Sevika is not good with words. She knows this. However, being with Mel has taught her to choose her words more carefully, and also that – to Mel – words are meaningful. It doesn’t escape her the way Mel softens when she calls her ‘my love’ or when she asks her about her day. How she loves to hear Sevika murmuring words of praise and encouragement into her ear. How she needs the affection Sevika feels for her to be spoken out loud sometimes, not just demonstrated.
Sevika had thought that she was improving in her communication with Mel. That’s why she’s surprised when she screws things up so spectacularly.
It’s an unusually frigid morning in Piltover, and even the fires burning around the Medarda residence can’t chase away the chill. Mel has been struck down the past several days by an illness, nothing particularly severe thankfully, but lingering nonetheless. Sevika has been tending to her tirelessly, keeping a close eye on her. It’s times like these that remind her, for all of Mel’s ferocity and strength, she is still delicate and easily broken. It makes Sevika want to sweep her in her arms and never let go.
Mel is out of bed already, a persistent cough making itself known as she starts her morning routine. Sevika watches lazily from the bed as Mel takes a seat at the vanity, pouring oil into her hands and running it through her curls. She’s looking better, Sevika notes, but is still too pale and coughing far too much for Sevika’s liking. She supposes they’ll spend another day in bed or lounging on the patio wrapped in blankets, as she plies Mel with tea and bites of food. Perhaps Mel will paint a little if she’s up for it.
But then she notices Mel reaching for her hair adornments, a clear sign that she’s planning on going out today.
“What are you doing?” Sevika asks, frowning.
“Getting ready,” Mel answers, as if it should be obvious. “I have a speech today at a fundraising gala, remember?” She coughs lightly. “I do hope my voice holds. It seems much improved, at least.”
Sevika grunts. “You’re staying home.”
She knows she’s fucked up as soon as Mel stiffens, freezing with a clip halfway to her hair.
“Excuse me?” Mel’s voice is cold.
Sevika knows she should stop, but she’s also never been one to back down from a fight. “You’re not going. You’re still sick,” she repeats firmly.
If looks could kill, Sevika would have just taken her last breath.
“I think you must be confused,” Mel says slowly, in a deadly calm tone. “About how this works. You do not get to tell me what I am and am not doing. In fact, I don’t recall asking for your opinion on the matter.”
Sevika can feel red-hot anger rising in her gut. She sits up, holding Mel’s gaze steadily. “That’s how this works, huh?”
“Indeed.” Mel’s eyes are like daggers.
“Fine, then,” Sevika pushes herself up and retrieves her clothes from the floor, pulling them on quickly. “See if I care.”
“I never asked you to,” Mel bites back, which makes Sevika’s heart break a little.
Sevika leaves the room before she can say more things she’ll regret.

Sevika can’t quite bring herself to leave the Medarda residence entirely. It’s been weeks since she’s been back to her shoddy place in Zaun, and it doesn’t feel right to leave on such a sour note. And despite her stubbornness, Mel is still ill, and Sevika can’t bear to leave her completely alone, even if she knows logically that no harm will come to Mel here.
However, one of the perks of living in a mansion is that it’s entirely possible to avoid someone all day if you’re trying to.
She heads to the training room Mel had personalized for her, pummeling her frustrations into a punching bag. She punches and punches until the joint where her stub meets her prosthetic arm begins to ache, and then a ways past that. Maybe it’s not healthy, but she welcomes this sort of pain. This pain makes sense. Fighting with Mel? That doesn’t.
By the time she’s truly wrung out and drenched in sweat, it’s been at least an hour or two. She downs several glasses of water, sighing. Most likely Mel hasn’t left for the gala yet, and Sevika knows she should apologize. If only her love wasn’t so stubborn, she thinks. Can’t she just see that Sevika has her wellbeing in mind? She’s not as strong as she thinks she is.
She slowly makes her way back to the master suite, contemplating her words. She would much rather reconcile with a kiss – or other activities – but she knows Mel will expect words. Damn words.
Sevika decides she’ll shower first, then find wherever Mel’s gotten off to after she’s a little more clear headed and less sweaty.
However, she’s saved a search when she enters their bathroom and is met with the sound of raspy coughing. In a flash, her lingering anger is gone, replaced only with a sharp twist of concern.
She strides into the spacious washroom only to find Mel slumped on the floor of the large marble shower, bent over and coughing horribly. Steam swirls around her and it seems like she can barely get a breath in, not even noticing Sevika enter. Judging by the amount of heat and steam in the room, she must have been here a while, Sevika worries.
She rushes into the shower to scoop Mel into her arms, not even noticing as the water drenches her clothes.
“Oh, my love,” she murmurs quietly. “Come here.” She bodily carries Mel out of the humid bathroom and onto their bed, tugging the lilithe woman into her lap. Mel is still coughing, so Sevika rubs her back, soothing, and speaking to her quietly. “Breathe for me, Mel. Just breathe.” She covers her in a blanket, wrapping her up gently.
It takes longer than Sevika would like, her pulse hammering as she wonders if she should send for a physician, but eventually the cough calms. Mel, clearly exhausted, slumps against her chest. They’re both dripping wet, soaking straight through the sheets to the mattress, but Sevika couldn’t care less. The only thing that matters is the woman in her arms.
“Are you all right?” she asks gently, after a few minutes of quiet. “How’s your chest?”
“Tight,” Mel says hoarsely, clearing her throat and sniffling. Sevika hands her a handkerchief. “But I’m all right.”
“You worried me,” Sevika admits, brushing curls away from Mel’s face so she can get a better look at her. “What were you doing in there?” She tries to make sure her tone is gentle, not accusatory.
“I thought the steam would help my congestion,” Mel sighs. “But then I started coughing and couldn’t stop.”
Sevika hums in acknowledgement, continuing to stroke her hair. “I’m sorry,” she murmurs after a beat of silence. “I shouldn’t have left. Or said what I did. You’re free to make your own decisions.”
“It’s okay,” Mel curls closer to her, resting her head on Sevika’s sternum. “I too was being stubborn. Clearly I am not as well as I would like, just yet.” She turns to look up at her with her golden eyes. “Although I am not a woman to be ordered about, Sevika.”
“I know,” Sevika runs a hand soothingly down Mel’s side. “I was only… I didn’t –” she pauses. Words. She racks her brain for the correct ones. “I wasn’t trying to tell you what to do. I was just worried about your health. It came out wrong. I’m sorry.”
Mel turns so that she can press a tender kiss to Sevika’s lips. “I understand. All is forgiven,” she murmurs, then lays back down again with a sigh. “I shall have to send word I won’t be speaking today.”
“I’ll handle it,” Sevika promises, tugging Mel closer. “Just rest for now. Let me hold you.”
