Still buzzing from a week immersed in songwriting following last year's SongStudio–in true form–I couldn't sleep. On the back porch of my stuffy apartment, I uncorked a bottle of wine and started picking what was to become "Archetype X." I wrote and recorded this song on a guitar I have since lost (also in true form); making this the last song recorded on an acoustic that meant a great deal to me. At this time, I found myself thoroughly revisiting Patrick Rothfuss' series, The Kingkiller Chronicle–a personal favourite since The Name of the Wind (the first book) debuted. I am especially enamoured with the depiction of Denna, who is the embodiment of an archetype that I believe many of us can relate to. We are ephemeral beings, personifying the very fleeting nature of our existence. Our desires only fall into reach when we no longer attempt to grasp them. I owe a special thanks to my good friend, David–he was pivotal in bringing this song to life. For now here is a rough sketch. Anyone out there try musicoin yet? I just released ‘Archetype X’ on there... Still curious.
