Reclaiming the River

Our design unit embraced the view that resilience principles enable communities to adapt and transform and therefore our design philosophies followed a post-conflict resilient approach. The site was a disused power station  that had been heavily damaged during the siege in Sarajevo. It was situated on a busy junction on the north side of the River Miljacka in the municipality Novo Sarajevo. My project focused on the sites relationship with the disused River Miljacka that runs through the heart of Sarajevo and I combined the programme of a river conservation trust with private baths along with a bank side river filtration system. My materiality choices reflected my programme through the use of recycled gabions, constructed using the demolished ruin. I then used them as cladding for the changing area which created a diffused lighting throughout the interior spaces and also as walls for the outdoor filtration and swimming pools.
