So I’ve been reading the Archibald Lox series from Darren Shan.

I’m almost through with the second volume (The Kidnapped Prince) and I’m not sure why these books seem to drag so much in the middle? (Happened also during the Empress of Suanpan arc in the first volume.) Like maybe it’s establishing details that’ll be important later (as has happened many times in Shan’s books) or it’s just more world-building, but particularly in Kidnapped Prince I just could NOT get into the Grop Tourney stuff. I know some people who’ve read the books like Grop so maybe it’s just the fact I dgaf about sports stuff? But idk I feel like a good fourth or so of the book could have been taken out and summed up more succinctly.

That being said, I am enjoying the books. While the series hasn’t really gripped me in the same way The Demonata or Cirque du Freak has (though I don’t think ANYTHING could have as strong a hold on me as the latter) I am still enjoying it. I think that may be because it’s just so different from Shan’s other stuff. It’s much more fantasy-based than horror-based and a lot less death and gore (not that I dislike fantasy but it seems like Shan excels at writing horror more). But I do like the surreal-ness of the Merge and I think there’s a lot of neat world-building.

As far as the story goes, when stuff ramps up, it REALLY ramps up. Like Archie’s kidnapping and interrogation in Kidnapped Prince? Chef’s kiss. The ever-growing mystery of why Archie can do what he can do and characters like Inez and Cal and the SubMerged are also real driving forces in making me continue to read. And I guess if it’s holding my interest, than the story is doing its job! I’m eager to see where it goes.

Also idk if I’ll do fanart for the series or not (if I do I’m into Cal and Adil 😙).

My Archibald Lox theory that I'm pretty sure is true at this point: Archie is definitely Stefan. Now, I've had this theory since halfway through the books but I wasn't sure how until book 7 came out.

Royals are Born, which means Stefan was Born. When Winston killed him, he would have woken up in the Merge and the midwives should have taken him to the fires of release before he was completely himself. My theory is that Winston, either alone or with the help of his wife, got to Stefan before anyone else could and took him to the Born. They put him in foster care and left him.

I don't know if I can fully blame Winston yet, but he wasn't too surprised when Diamond didn't fall or when Archie opened the Crypt lock. He knows Archie is a royal. And he was the one who explained that when a royal is killed, they lose their aura. Which is why Archie doesn't have one.

Monthly Wrap-Up: April

Hello!

How are we all? It’s been awhile, I decided to take a much needed break from blogging. I’m back and ready to shout about all the books again! I hope everyone is safe and well. My April wrap-up is a little late, but better late than never, eh? I managed to read seven books this month, I think my reading slump is definitely coming to an end.
