day 368, a goliath heron for @lightbeyondthegrave.
Requests for birds are open! Just drop a message with one and I’ll reply when I can. It just takes me a while to get to them these days. I’m aiming for at least once a week, usually Thursdays. [project tag] | [kofi]

Creature Awaits #189
Each week I plan to feature an amazing creature, admiring God's fantastic artistry. Hopefully it’ll brighten someone’s day to see something new and interesting if they haven’t seen it before. : )
Happy New Year! The Greeks were thought to have based the mythological Phoenix on the now extinct Bennu Heron (Ardea bennuides), so to kick off 2023, it feels fitting to feature a variety of gorgeous "living phoenixes" - extant herons from around the world. - 💕

The Goliath heron
Scientific Name: Ardea goliath
Region: Around lakes, wetlands and swamps throughout central Africa
Size: About 3'11"-5' (~1.20m-1.52m) tall, with a roughly 6'1"-7'7" (~1.85m-2.30m) wingspan
Interesting Notes: Since the extinction of the aforementioned Bennu heron, the Goliath heron has remained the largest living heron in the world. Like other herons, it catches fish by "spearing" them with its long bill; however, sometimes the process of sliding the fish off its beak and setting it down so it can pick it up again to eat it takes so long that other birds will swoop in and steal their meal. : /
A new variant has been added!
