Area 11 - Curtain Fall

Okay so I know that a lot of the time characters from one anime will seem very similar to characters from others, and sometimes you’ll even see relationships between characters looking much like a relationship in another anime, but can they be even more similar than I thought?

My point here is that the song I’ve shared here is Shi No Barado, by one of my favourite bands, Area 11 (and featuring Beckii Cruel), and it’s supposed to be about or inspired by Death Note, as the lyrics seem very Death Note inspired, and if you watch the video you can see that Beckii is dressed sort of like Misa Amane, and from her point of view the lyrics seem to be Misa singing to Light, while Sparkles* is supposed to be Light (I think) either singing to Misa or maybe about the death note, or maybe he’s singing to Ryuk. I’m not really sure who he’s singing to. Also there’s the fact that they said it is about Death Note. And there’s the fact that Shi No Barado translates to The Ballad of Death

Anyway, I’m getting off topic there. Though this song is about Death Note, whenever I listen to it, I get some vibes for the EreAnnie ship from Attack on Titan, and if not the ship, then just the relationship between the two characters. Maybe that’s just because I’m obsessed with that ship and so there’s some bias, but the lyrics sound like stuff you’d hear to go along with the EreAnnie pairing, and the song feels like it could be for them.

For example the 2nd to 4th lines of the song are:

My revenge was your gift to me, It's something that I can never repay, But I will try anyway.

And in those lines it instantly feels like something someone would say for the ship. That first line there “My revenge was your gift to me” in terms of EreAnnie could be how Annie trained Eren, and taught him how to fight (so he’s getting revenge on the titans), and how she taught him a bit about how the world works, and what it’s like within the walls. Then the other two lines are how Annie is in the crystal, and is seen as an enemy by most, so Eren can’t thank her or help her or do anything for her, but he’ll try, and so he’s getting revenge for his people, and could have helped her during the time skip.

Next let’s look at the first half of the chorus:

'Cause, baby, when our eyes met, ('cause, baby, when our eyes met) I could never look away, You're all I ever wanted, (You're all I ever wanted) There's nothing left to say

Those first two lines (not including the bit in brackets, though I guess you can include it because in an EreAnnie situation that would be coming from Annie), sounds like something that people, or at the very least I, would have to do with EreAnnie. Eren and Annie not being able to keep their eyes off of each other sounds like something I’d write, but in AoT from Eren’s point of view it could be how he found Annie interesting as a person, and was amazed by her fighting style, among other things, while from Annie’s point of view it could be how Eren intrigued her as a person, how he affected her as a whole and also how she, alongside Reiner and Bertolt tried to keep an eye on him after finding out that he’s a titan shifter. Then “You’re all I ever wanted” is somewhat relevant as well. Eren looked up to Annie as she was different, and so he wanted to be like her, while Annie wanted to be more like Eren, and also in her character song she says how she was jealous of Eren. Also, I believe that someone like Eren is one of the only people who has the capability to help Annie.

And finally, though I could probably go on for much longer, let’s look at the next two verses after the chorus:

My body will be a fortress, I will keep you safe from pain, My eyes will be your weapons, My losses are your gains, Whoa, Together we can burn this to the ground, Rebuild it into something right, 'Cause you are bigger than the planet Earth, And I am your satellite,

Now let’s break this down. The first two lines to me sound very EreAnnie like. I see Eren as someone who would want to protect Annie, especially after all she’s done, and in a relationship he’d still want to protect her, even though he knows she is more than capable of protecting herself. Hell, when Eren was told that Annie was the female titan, he tried to defend her, and accused the others of making things up, and then when he saw Annie transform, he couldn’t do it, and when he saw Annie crying, he froze. 

“My losses are your gains” is, as a side note, sort of how whenever Eren lost, it was a win for Annie as it went in favour of her mission for the Marleyans. 

Anyway, “Together we can burn this to the ground, rebuild in into something right” to me sounds like how since Annie helped Eren understand the world around him, and since Eren learnt about all the corruption in the government and the walls, they would try to fix it and make something better. Which is what Eren did do with the help of his friends and some of the others, but now there’s the matters of the Marleyans, and so Annie could help him fix the system and right all the wrongs before she dies from her curse.

Then, those last two lines “’Cause you are bigger than the planet Earth, and I am your satellite,” once again link into what I see their relationship as. To Eren, Annie could be bigger than anything else, and in a relationship she would be one of the most important things, if not the most important thing to him. And then, he is her satellite, as in watching over her, and helping her out. To Annie, Eren could also be just as important, on one hand because of him being a shifter and having the coordinate, but on the other because while Annie doesn’t make friends easily, Eren managed to slip through and show her what it’s like, and in a relationship Annie would treasure what they have.

Anyway, rant over. Maybe I’m just crazy and am looking way too much into this, and maybe character types and relationships are used a lot more than it first seems, but Shi No Barado reminds me of the EreAnnie pairing. Maybe I wrote this becase I want more people to ship EreAnnie (because I don’t see why they don’t, and do instead ship weird pairings that make no sense like Ereri, Mikannie and Eremin), or maybe I just felt like it and want to see what others wrote. I dunno. I forgot. Hopefully though Isayama will have Annie return soon so we can get some interaction between her and Eren, and so that we may get answers to questions we may or may not have.

Unfortunately, Area 11 do not have a song about Attack on Titan, so I can’t talk about that, but I would recommend listening to their songs, or at the very least Shi No Barado.
