Ares Shepard: Kaidan made Ares promise to specifically not tell Coats that he went to Terra Nova to flush out a nest of separatists, but when Kaidan goes dark and Ares recieves troubling news from Joker, Ares is very quick to break that promise.
Cameron Shepard: On Akuze, when his Captain made him promise to take care of the team, Cameron already knew that he would have to break that promise.

When it became clear that TLH won't just be a one-shot, I needed more substance for Kaidan's best friend Ares Shepard. I decided on a whim that he was from Mindoir, that his biotics where not stable enough to join the Alliance which was fine by Shepard since he wanted to into R&D anyway. Didn't turn out that way.
Then it came to me that torfan has a lot of potential for a Shepard with a Colonist background. What would happen if a Shepard from Mindoir came across the possibility to murder every single Batarian on that moon?
"I killed them, Kaidan. Spirits help me, I killed them all."
This is the one sentence that is the basis for that story. Shepard returning to the ship, kitting down in his quarters and waiting for Kaidan to pick up the vid call though it's 4 am on his end of the line. Shepard realising what he has done. Shepard, who sought retribution, realising that nothing will ever quench the pain of losing everyone dear to him on Mindoir. Shepard coming to face the fact that he and his team indeed butchered every one on Torfan.
Kaidan talking Shepard through the night to keep him from putting a gun to his head.
I seriously hope I can do the topic justice when I get around to write it.

I will answer them for Ares Shepard since he's the Shepard I'm currently poking most.
From this ask game.
Milky Way - What is your Shepard’s full name? Do they have a nickname? => Ares Shepard. His friends sometimes refer to him as "God of War" for obvious reasons. His call-sign is, of course, Mars (yes - he does know how to fly a Trident and he still does when he can).
Moon - Did your Shepard have any dreams as a child? (dream job, plans for future etc) => Yes, he did. He wanted to go into R&R in the agriculture field since he's from Mindoir. He always dreamed of making it easier for his parents and other colonists. That he's biotic didn't deter him. He was implanted and stabilised, but didn't receive any training how to use his biotics.
Sun - Was there a person in your Shepard’s life that changed their view on life/the world? => It actually was Kaidan. In Ares' verse, Kaidan is the one who teaches him how to use his biotics after the trauma of Mindoir leaves him almost insane and crippled with grief. He was ready to give it all up since he was no use to anyone - not to the Alliance at least. He is at first reluctant to let Kaidan in, even thinks himself in love with him for a brief time (Ares is grace and grey-romantic), but Kaidan's patience and compassion give him perspective and enough will to live again that he also wants to learn.

Shepard looked at him as if he had grown at least one additional head, if not five. “Engagement.”
Kaidan released the breath he’d been holding for longer than was strictly necessary. “Engagement.”
Shepard snorted. “Fuck me, Kaidan.”
“I, ah. Don’t think Daryl would appreciate that.”
“Pfft.” Shepard got up, and drew Kaidan into his arms. “I’ve known you a lot longer than he does.”
“Yeah, and you always said risking our friendship for—”
“—a fuck I wouldn’t enjoy isn’t on the table, I know,” Shepard said, finishing Kaidan’s sentence – as they had done for at least ten years by now. “When did you ask him?”
“I didn’t.” Shepard put him at an arms distance, looking at him with a gaze that could cut steel and silence Admiral Hackett. “He asked me when I got back from Terra Nova.”
“And you said yes?” Kaidan nodded, grinning when Shepard let him go and fell into a string of the most colourful expletives he had heard for a long time.
Finally, Shepard stopped, swiped his hands over his face and looked back at Kaidan. “Damn it, Kaidan. Coats should be crawling on his hands and knees and fucking beg you to take him back, and you go and just say yes.”
Kaidan crossed his arms over his chest. “Yes, and we both know you played your part in this as well, Ares, so stop playing the grouchy best man.”
“I don’t know what you are talking about.”
Kaidan snorted. “The hell you don’t. Daryl told me about your little visit in London before I left for Terra Nova. He came for me,” he said.
“He came for you.”
“Yeah.” He smiled. “Our bond isn’t as weak as we thought. Or you for that matter. We both come with a lot of baggage we need to work through, but we will.” He held up a hand when Shepard opened his mouth. “Please, Ares. Don’t.”
Shepard smirked. “Not even a small ‘congratulations’?”
Kaidan rolled his eyes and allowed Shepard to renew the embrace. “Alright. But just a small one. You know. Wouldn’t want you to go out on a limb.” He jumped when Shepard slapped his ass, but he let it slide. This was his best friend after all.
