Why 99% of People Can't Win an Argument—And How Aristotle's 2,300-Year-Old Secret Turns Words Into Weapons

The go-to word to limit debate on tumblr is, of course, "unsafe."  "You talking like that makes me feel unsafe."  "Asking questions on that topic is making me feel like this isn't a safe space."  Etc etc.  

Of course I don't want anyone to feel unsafe.  And what may be a perfectly comfortable situation for one person could set off alarm bells in someone else's head--I get that.  But, at least on this site, people have begun to use this as a rescue tool when they have argued themselves into corners.  It's a form of manipulation, and I'm kind of sick of it????

If something makes you feel unsafe, you should be able to express that and reasonably believe people will respect that and stop.  But don't just throw that around as a security blanket to make people be nice to you.  That's such irresponsible behavior.

When you start a conversation with someone about how something they've said is off for _______reason and instead of interacting with you on the subject, they tell you that you're being negative, or too limiting, or some variation where they make the subject of the conversation your critique of them instead of the substance of the critique- they are refusing to talk about what you brought up. They will only speak about the tone of it, how the bringing up is an infringement on them, but they will not meet you at a discussion of subject. In war terms, yes you have gotten through their battle fortress. They have no defense, no supporting argument; there is only the counterattack, which has nothing to do with the original reason for argument; the war is becoming a war for avengement's sake. But really you never wanted a war, or a war of retaliation, you just wanted someone to stop being an asshat.
