The biggest asset a label can offer is money. They are your bank. And like a bank, if you don’t pay them back, they will take everything you own. No, they aren’t going to repossess your car to pay back the advance, but they will refuse to let you release many music you recorded on their dime and willhold onto your masters forever. Most contracts have rerecording clauses that prevent you from rerecording and releasing the songs you wrote while you were under contract with them. Did you spend three years working on your generation-defining masterpiece? Did you sacrifice your relationships, mental health and well-being to create a piece of art that you were certain would be worth it in the end? Your label may not see it this way, decide not to release it, refuse to let you out of your contract, “shelve” the album until you decide to break up. Tough luck. This, unfortunately, is not unique. But we never hear about these stories, because they aren’t glamorous and they’re from artists you, of course, have never heard of. But some of my favorite artists have gone through just this. It’s depressing. And infuriating. Don’t let this happen to you.

Content I Wish I Created #2: Ari Herstand’s Song or Album Release Checklist
I’ve been working on a release checklist of my own, but when I came across Ari Herstand’s, I was quite impressed. His focus is certainly different than mine, so I wouldn’t have put together a checklist quite like this (though I still wish I had). More than likely, I will be adding a few of these items to my list too.
He shared the following 26 steps in an interview on the DIY Musician Podcast,…
