The DUFF (2015)
Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween
“Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween” cut corners on everything and completely ruined any redeeming qualities the first film had.
Sonny and Sam are two friends who want to start up a garbage disposal business. They get a call to dispose of the garbage in an old, abandoned house. There, they find a secret door that holds R.L. Stine’s first book and unleash Slappy the dummy. Now, Slappy wants to be a part of the family and he’ll do anything to win his new mother’s love.
Just from looking at the budget alone, I could tell this movie was going to be worse in quality. While the first film had a $58 million budget and this film had only $35 million. They couldn’t afford good writers this time, so the plot and all the dialogue feel like they were written for a made-for-television movie. I know I said that the last time, but the first film was like Disney Channel levels of bad and this is like a Lifetime original movie. The first film had a distinct atmosphere and it’s completely abandoned in this film. Now, I don’t have a problem with new actors for the sequel especially since every Goosebumps book had new characters. I just wished they hired competent actors for this film. The recognizable faces in this film just looked like they agreed to this movie for the paycheck. Jack Black doubles down on his Mark Hamill Joker impression for his Slappy voice and then shows up too late in the story. The scares a significantly weaker than the first and I’m already forgetting the monsters that were in this film. I hate to be that guy who complains about the consistency between Goosebumps movies, but it’s hard not to complain when the first establishes the rules of this world and the sequel goes against every one of them. The people who made this film finally got around to seeing the original “Night Of The Living Dummy” episode and wanted to shoehorn the incantation to summon Slappy. The only problem is the previous film already established that the book summons him, not the incantation. Then the rest of the monsters are summoned with cheap Halloween costumes from a drug store. I don’t usually complain about this, but the film had noticeably bad ADR especially in the Slappy mirror scene. It made it disorienting and hard to listen for dialogue. This movie was a bit hard for me to watch. I was trying to keep myself awake and force myself to watch for what felt like three hours. The worst part is, this film has the audacity to sequel-bait. The first one didn’t have any end credit stingers and the story seemed to be wrapped up from there. They went ahead and made a sequel anyways with the intention of making this a franchise. I think the thought of having to watch a sequel to this movie is scarier than anything in the movie itself.

WHEN WE FIRST MET (2018) Grade: C+
Surprisedly I got into the plot. It was a good mix of the time travel genre & Rom-Com. Ari Sandel has done a couple movies that have been fun.
