When Niro reached the couch on which his daughter was reclined, he scooped her up effortlessly with one arm under her thighs and the other behind her back, holding her to him as he turned and sat down on the couch. Gently, he settled her down onto his lap.
How he loved that she was smaller in stature; Neora and Aroen were statuesque, stunning, perfect in their own right, but deep in his heart he nursed a private joy that his beloved Arinoa took after her mother. It was delightfully easy to put her wherever he wanted her.
Arinoa is the eldest of the family's second generation. Sired by Neora and carried by Orin, she was raised to be her mother's heir, just as Neora is Niro's, and indeed she's followed Orin's lead since youth. Niro adored her from early on; she's rarely had to live with not getting what she wants.
Ari, much like Aroen, holds a great deal of contempt for outsiders. In her, this manifests as a penchant for making them uncomfortable, especially through casual nudity (which, frankly, she would do even without the benefit of others' discomfort, but which is only sweetened by it) and crude language. Unlike Aroen, Ari's utter disinterest in those outside the family has made her a relatively quick killer, for she has no reason to keep victims around. As quick, that is, as a death by any blunt implement can be.
Innate shapeshifting abilities melded with practiced druidcraft makes Ari a skillful adopter of animal shapes. She's seen slinking around the cult compound as a white tiger at least as often as she's seen in any other appearance.
1: Why is your character's eye color the way it is? Is it random or not?
Arinoa's eyes are a pale, luminous pink, a lighter shade than anyone else's in the family save for Orin. This is very much deliberate. I tend to use eye color to signal approximate ancestry within the family; Niro's eyes are quite saturated red, and Orin's are, of course, that stark near-featureless white, so the closer a descendent is to either of those shades, the more their eyes bear a resemblance.
This is, of course, an imperfect system, because the distinctive look of Orin's eyes isn't just white irises. I don't know how her eyes work at all. I think their pupil-less appearance is probably illusory. More generally, changeling genetics are weird for similar reasons: how much of Orin's appearance is biological? How much of it is genetic, and thus heritable? I don't know. But I need to generate symbolism somehow. So the lighter the eyes, the closer to Orin.
Like the other pink- or red-eyed members of the family, her eyes have an uncanny scarlet eyeshine in the dark.
2: Who gave your character their name?
A collaborative effort between Niro, Orin, Neora, and Aroen. I think Orin takes particular delight in the invention of names for the children of the family, and it was always her idea to give the twins (and later pseudotwins) palindrome names.
For the family (as in the real world), the name Arinoa was chosen for its look and sound, no more or less.
(In practice, as with all the family members' names, Rae and I picked em off a giant list I keep of palindrome name pairs that fit the Niro Family Naming Conventions.)
3: Does your character have tattoos? What do they mean?
She always has a few that mean that she was left alone with ink and a needle for a while. Like the other family members, Arinoa's body heals so quickly and effectively that it more or less erases nonmagical tattoos in a span of anywhere from a few months to a few years, so tattoos are never anywhere near permanent and must be regularly maintained if they're wanted to stick around. She doesn't maintain hers, and she also doesn't put much time and effort into the ones she gives herself. So her right hand/forearm, lower legs, and the tops of both feet are usually decorated with lots of little half-faded stick-and-poke stars, daggers, and hearts.
