This big old armadillo skeleton washed up after a recent flood. Never used to have any around here but they’ve been moving further north in the last few years. Now they are all over the place!

Sadly I didn’t have anything big enough to carry him (always good to be extra cautious handling armadillo remains as they are known to carry leprosy; granted the very few cases of people contracting it from them were believed to be because they prepared and ate the armadillos but still good to be extra careful) but I’ll be heading back tomorrow to grab him if he’s still there.

The 6 Banded Armadillo!

Since this species is often diurnal it can often be at risk. Whislt they can roll up into a ball they can and will bite but usually, they'll just run away.

They dig dens 2m underground although this may be temporary which seems like an awful lot of work, however their strong forelimbs make them excellent diggers.

As mentioned earlier they like to use thier teeth, apparently when killing insects or tearing into carrion they'll stand on it, grab hold of it in their jaws and tear it to pieces. Rather lethal dont you think?

I’m back from my short mental health break, thank you all for being understanding. In the meantime I’ve added two new species to the collection and replaced a broken skull. First pic is a nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus), second is an American mink (Neovision vision), and the third is a Sunda flying lemur (Galeopterus variegatus). Both of the new skulls will get their own post/write-up soon, the flying lemur especially is a very cool species that I’m excited to own.
