I genuinely could not care less about the Restaurant Wars episode from Steven Universe.

Don't get me wrong—it wasn’t a bad episode by any means, it had some nice anime references and all that. My main problem was with how mean-spirited it was, specifically towards Ronaldo.

So basically, Steven orders off-menu at the Fry Shop and accidentally reignites the restaurant war between Mr. Fryman and Kofi Pizza, which affects both their children in many ways. Wanting to fix things, Steven comes up with a plan inspired by Romeo and Juliet, where Ronaldo and Kiki pretend to be in love to bring the two sides together.

And that’s where the unfair treatment of Ronaldo begins.

He explicitly says he has a girlfriend and doesn't want to participate. He gets overridden and mocked for mentioning Jane exists. Despite this, he goes along with the plan because he genuinely wants to help and do something selfless for once, only to then be dumped publicly by Jane when she shows up at the worst possible moment (the plan went successfully, with Ronaldo being visibly nervous throughout, up until the point when it seemed the war would genuinely end).

The rest of the episode he's visibly heartbroken, crying openly, while nobody around him acknowledges it. Not Steven, who, back then, cared about everyone's problems and was the only person we ever saw actually willing to show compassion for Ronaldo. Not Peedee, who usually does everything in his power to keep his older brother happy. His own dad—the one who started the beef that caused this in the first place—frowns at his distress and looks away. The only acknowledgment he gets afterward is Mr. Fryman casually asking if he heard the war was over. And that’s it.

This entire episode to me personally felt like an r/FUCKYOUINPARTICULAR towards Ronaldo, I can understand why he's unlikable for a lot of the fandom but he absolutely did not deserve to spend an entire episode being used as a tool that they basically just disregarded when using him didn't work.

Ronaldo is often used as comic relief, and that’s fine—but there’s a line where exaggeration turns into something genuinely sad. This episode crosses that line. Instead of laughing with him or even at him in a lighthearted way, it feels like the narrative is just piling on. You don’t have to like Ronaldo to admit how needlessly cruel it was to double down on his loneliness just for the sake of a quick laugh or two. I know people like to see him suffer but… dang. Did the writers really have to go as far as this?

What makes this more frustrating is how it contrasts with Steven Universe’s usual themes. The show consistently emphasizes empathy and understanding people even when they’re difficult. We even see that extended to Ronaldo himself in episodes like Rocknaldo, an infamous episode often used as the single piece of evidence that he’s “the worst” despite the fact that he does learn something by the end. But here, he’s at his lowest point and the story just doesn’t care. And the complete lack of follow-up or emotional acknowledgment makes the whole situation feel disproportionately harsh.

To the episode’s credit however, it can be read as a representation of the casualties of conflict and how they affect people who aren’t directly responsible for it—Ronaldo, in that sense, becomes collateral damage in a situation he didn’t create. However, if that was the intention, the episode doesn’t fully commit to exploring it. But thankfully there are small hints later on that things improve. After five days of a heartbroken Ronaldo posting on his in-universe blog (mirrored on IRL Tumblr on @keepbeachcityweird) to no avail, we did get an indication that Jane might still love him, through a screenshot of Jane liking (a now hopeful) Ronaldo's post explaining about what really happened with the war. Then at the end of both the series and Steven Universe: Future finales, they are seen together in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it scene, even holding hands in Future.

So yeah, I'm very happy that Ronaldo did get his sort of quiet happy ending with Jane after all. It's a satisfying and honestly fitting conclusion for a character of his archetype (albeit with a still kind of incomplete arc), who spends the whole series trying (and failing) to feel special and important in his own weird way and ultimately ends up finding someone that makes him feel that way.

The one thing I think is missing is that we never got to see them reconcile onscreen. We never saw the conversation or the apology, and we never saw anyone acknowledge how much that moment affected him. Because in my opinion Ronaldo really deserved a scene where they showed him talking to Jane after the whole thing. Not only would it be the moment his character needed but it could’ve reminded people that Ronaldo is more than just his worst moments and that he actually does care and can be vulnerable. And it wouldn’t have done much just for his character but also for the show’s own consistency. And as an added bonus, the other restaurant kids could have supported Ronaldo in that scene as well, the same way they really ought to have done so during the restaurant war. That would also have reinforced something the episode itself unintentionally undermines: the idea that people should support each other, especially in moments of conflict. If anything, Restaurant Wars becomes ironic in that sense because it accidentally reinforces the worst possible reading of his character—that he only matters when he’s useful, and once he’s not, he just gets ignored. Which is especially rough given that the episode actually echoes something deeper in Ronaldo’s character that we’ve already seen before, particularly in his fallout with his childhood best friend (and only friend at the time), Lars Barriga. Whether or not he consciously connects the two, the emotional pattern is the same: being valued until he wasn't.

Like I already said, you don’t have to like Ronaldo, but he did not deserve all that with zero follow-up. At the very least someone should’ve given the big guy a hug.

Regardless, the emotional pattern being repeated whether it was intentional or not is one of the many reasons why I personally think a reconciliation with Lars (which hopefully happens in Lars’ upcoming spinoff) matters as much as it does. It’s one of the main reasons I’m excited for Lars of the Stars, although I understand that there is a chance it may not happen. But here’s hoping they can at least give him something the main series didn’t if possible.

why: in all honesty i like a lot of their songs i mean R U Mine? is awesome, and 505 is a classic, but No. 1 Party Anthem is my favorite so far. i love the writing of the lyrics and just the over all sound but it’s my favorite because it’s reminds me of someone dear to me. so yeah i know there are much better songs but honestly, if someone asks my favorite song from them i will immediately say this song.
