A visit to a gold jeweler in Ascoli @cocciaeoddi with le studentesse to learn about the family business. They make lovely jewelry reproductions from Ghirlando paintings for the women who dress up in Renaissance costumes for the Quintana jousting festival. They also make a reproduction of an ancient Ascolana symbol (round wheel like symbol) that harks back to the Sabine tribe that founded the city way before the Romans even existed. It is a mystery what this symbol really stands for… good fortune, fertility, safe transfer to heaven, Goddess mother. This object has been found in tombs laid upon the stomach of the deceased). Molto interessante!! Here at Coccia & Oddi the have turned this symbol into lovely rings and pendants. We got to see the master jewelers workshop, see his tools and spent time chatting in Italian!
