Arnab Sengupta's newest album "Leap of Faith" features a kindness to it, one that revels in his prolific sensibilities of his intimate popcraft. On "Leap of Faith," the songs play off each other resulting in a powerful array of colors that bloom forth in their own flowery way. The best of all are the lyrics that seem to perfectly embody the overall spirit of the sound, tying everything together. Making sure they hold nothing back, as the pieces feature such playfulness. Such a beautiful sprawling album it is easy to get beguiled by its many charms. From melodic flourishes to efficient, tight grooves he spawns quite a wide range. Genre-wise, it runs the gamut from Jazz to World to Blues all within a firmly rooted Experimental context. His vocals seemingly rise above the rest of the sound serving as the very beating heart. Giving some insight into the album release, Arnab shares with us:
My songwriting journey started way back in 2006 after a good 15 odd years of having assimilated a plethora of musical styles and genre, by studying, performing and nurturing Contemporary music in various capacities. It was my last year in the frivolous 20s. I was soon entering the more mature 30s and various incidences and situations impelled me to look at life much more deeply from within. For “Leap of Faith” I wanted to try out some new styles and sounds. The creative ideas for the songs in this album have spanned over 5 years, which entailed my migration to Australia, my experiences of setting up life in a new environment, my learning and regular practice of Vipassana meditation and dedicating my musical direction to learning and practicing Jazz piano with my teacher from New York. So this album did mark a “Leap of Faith” in many ways. The songs in this album are more versatile and there is a certain stylistic variety which shines through, though the words are still about my pursuit of the final frontier – the ultimate truth and meaning of Life.
Songs that will resonate with you immediately will be the stunning opener "Face the Crowd," alongside the bold sounds of "Perfect Line," and "Alone But Not Lonely." Each piece holds its own while creating an exceptional sound that pours from his very heart and soul. The record is honest, thoughtful and one of a kind which helps to put Arnab and his songwriting on the map. Everything neatly ties itself together with the gentle slides of “Leap of Faith” as the album closes out.
