Jervis didn't have a choice in what he did. He had to protect Sera, he always tried to ever since they first met. When he had learned Sera had been abusing drugs he helped her through it all until she was clean and safe. He would have done anything for her. He had to fight for her in this, she needed to be protected. He didn't have a choise, not really. He was sorry this was the only thing he could do but he'd protect her no matter the cost. Even if it was his life. There was war and it just kept growing closer. He joined the military to protect her, to fight for her. Five years since that day, it had been five years since the day he packed his things, only the bare minimum of it, and left the note. Saying he'd be back before she knew it and that he loved her, that he always would. The only thing he took from the large apartment they shared was a picture of her that he kept close no matter what and his hat. The military hadn't been happy about the hat and he had been sure they threw it away since that day but to him it was just another sacrifice he made to help and protect Sera. He fought, he starved, he nearly died more times then he could count. The forth year in He found his hat, it hadn't been thrown away just kept in a locker. He wore it for the last year. The worst year. The one where he knew this would end, the war would end and he'd finally be able to return to his Sera, his sweet Sera. She was the only thing that kept him going, her picture saved him so many times, and made him cry so many more. He tried to call her when he had been able but she never answered and that nearly broke him. He nearly let himself die more then once during that last and horrible year, not that any of the years before it had been any better. He was hardly the man he was, war.. war wasn't meant for men like Jervis. He was a gentle soul and killing broke him, nearly worse then having others try and murder him. So many times he cried out in pain, both from memories and being hurt in so many ways. He was scarred and broken but he wore his hat proudly and killed to protect the only person he'd ever have in his life. Even his hat had been damaged, riddled with bullets but he repaired it the best he could in a war, patched it back together over and over like his body. By the time the war finally ended Jervis was wounded badly, a bullet hit him in the shoulder three days before the end and another in his left leg leaving him with a limp. They said the limp was probably permanent as the bullet injured one of his tendons in his leg. He was patched up the best they could do before he was sent back to Gotham, back to home. His shoulder was bandaged and that would heal in time. His leg also bandaged but the limp was there to stay and he'd been given a cane to walk with since it hurt to stand on it now. He walked back up to their apartment and smiled happily for the first time since he left it five years ago. He wore a nice deep blue coat with a matching vest and white long sleeved shirt. His pants were black and his shoes matched. His now patchwork hat sat atop his head as always, his glasses slightly cracked but his eyes for once filled with hope, and a broken sadness that could still be seen. He knocked on the door, the smile fell as he saw the door open. Sera was.. pregnant, heavily so and she looked happy. Before she saw him that is. arosebeyondtheveil
