Washington Square Park in 1966 when you could park your car along the circle and fountain. In fact, Robert Moses wanted to make the park more automobile friendly by building a highway straight through it from 5th Avenue to Laguardia Place. At the time cars could travel through the park, but in April 1959 the park was officially closed to all traffic. Today, residents in Brooklyn Heights who once denounced Moses' Washington Square Park highway are reacting to plans to temporarily close the Brooklyn Promenade while the BQE is rebuilt by arguing the BQE should be rerouted through Brooklyn Bridge Park, despite millions of visitors every year and over a decade of construction having just concluded this summer. #washingtonsquarepark #washingtonsquare #robertmoses #janejacobs #cityplanning #thevillage #greenwichvillagenyc #greenwichvillage #WSP #manhattan #nyc #downtown #soho #newyorkcity #arrchitecture #urbanplanning #parks #nychistory (at Washington Square Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/BojvuotHq_b/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=5i5xz3u7jk72
