Rewatch Thoughts - Oliver’s Treatment of Felicity
So as many know my BIGGEST issue with Season 6 was the treatment of Felicity by both Oliver and the lack of storyline as a whole.
I think it bothers me a lot when Oliver treats Felicity badly because it is out of character. We all know that he loves her to the moon and back. He is very observant of her and would do anything for her. So when he does dumb things, it’s feels so wrong.
Sometimes the dumb things he does are in character. I know many will disagree but I thought Oliver hunting down Darhk instead of being by Felicity’s bedside in 4x10 was very in character. Not right, he should have been with her, but Oliver is a man of action.
I also think Oliver choosing to sacrifice himself for everyone else going to prison at the end of Season 6 is something old Oliver would have done so it was in old Oliver character - his character has grown so much he should not have made this decision.
I recently rewatched 4x10 and 4x13 in both of these cases Oliver acted out of character in his horrible treatment of Felicity.
In 4x10 he arrived at the hospital after Felicity had awoken from at least two surgeries and had recently found out she was paralyzed and the conversation was not about her but about the point of Oliver’s mission. REALLY?! She’s in a freaking hospital bed and Oliver focuses on himself? I call bs on the writing here - I don’t think this in character at all.
In 4x13 Felicity’s father returns and this is HUGE. So much of Felicity’s character is tied up in him abandoning her at 8. Yes, there are other major things going on in this episode - Thea’s near death experience being one of them BUT this is STILL HUGE. Huge enough that Oliver should have noticed something was going on. Yes, Felicity should have told him right away, a little contradictory given her wanting Oliver to tell her right away about William - but I doubt she would have lied if asked. But when Felicity does tell Oliver about her father’s return he brushes it off and acts as though it’s a minor problem at the office. In fact, he gets an idea as to how to solve the problem with Nyssa and Malcolm from her comments instead of making sure she was alright. Felicity ends the episode by turning her father over to the police, when they talk at home later that night Oliver talks about this for a moment and then quickly jumps to caring about Malcolm - I had a bit of whiplash here. NOT COOL.
All this is to say, I probably shouldn’t have been so surprised at Oliver basically banishing Felicity from his and William’s personal lives at the beginning of 6a. And yes, she agreed - but I still have issues - IT WAS MONTHS. And Felicity’s desperation to be included hurt so much.
As Season 6 started this way and the writers continue to silence her throughout season 6, her only storyline being a stepmother - no, her business was not a storyline IMO, I should not have been surprised that they had Oliver act out of character after all his growth - making a life changing decision sending himself to prison for life and leaving Felicity all alone to be a single parent.
