Dunbroch had seen better days. After Merida and her mother had come to terms, after the Demon Bear Mordu had been released, after it had been decided Merida didn’t need to choose a husband yet, it should have led to better days. Except it seemed like Mordu had been keeping something at bay. In the months that passed since, strange creatures had arrived. The first wave was like large black ants with glowing eyes. It seemed like their warriors, and Merida with them, had been able to defeat them, but their numbers never diminished.
Then others came. Different shapes. Different forms and colors and sizes. Demons was the running theory, that had kept away as long as it was Mordu’s territory. But the Demon was gone.
They hoped.
Merida had been out, scouting, trying to determine the source of the monsters. It was overcast, so most of Dunbroch’s people had retreated inside-those not already up at the keep for safety. A sword on her back, her bow ready, an arrow notched. Fergus wouldn’t do for stealth or recon, a horse attracted too much attention.
However, sounds drew her attention. A battle. Merida fell back against a tree, peering out to observe the combat. Someone was fighting the creatures. A stranger, with a weapon she’d never seen before. She furrowed her brow, but dismissed suspicion for now.
For now, there were demons to be dealt with. So she set an arrow, and let it fly at the closest enemy, the furthest from the silver haired stranger.
“Ya came to Dunbroch at the worst time, Ahm afraid!”
