Progress Work As Promised Under The Cut

I don't know if it helps anyone to know this, but I mess up a lot. On easy stuff. Stuff that I think should be easy for someone whose been doing art for as long as I have. I'll start drawing, and see issues when I'm at the linework stage. So not that anyone asked, but here's my ass backwards process: It starts with a scribble of what I'm thinking:

Then, I try to like, actually apply thought/weight/anatomy to it:

Got all the way to the linework stage when I realized, I literally broke Tenna's back with this pose, and his face wasn't doing it for me:

Tried some different faces/expressions until it felt like it had a proper flow/shape to it and fixed Tenna's broken back:

Than put a BUNCH of different stars in different places... I had like, 3 different versions of different star placements until I was satisfied here they are overlapped:

And from there, I inked and hatched till the linework worked! I know no one out there is dying to know about my asinine processes, but like, I think it's nice when an artist is brave enough to show that they struggle. Social media often has me comparing myself to those who can draw a line perfectly the first time and don't need constant anatomy references. It can create a major inferiority complex. So sharing and showing my inferiority with the masses, how I work through it despite the slow, shaky, unconfident, idk... maybe it will help someone else feel like they can keep going. Even if they're not confidant either.

Art style breakdown /tutorial(??)

Some friends asked so here we go : disclaimer im bad at explaining (so feel free to send an ask or smth)

If its not for something important (commissions), i dont usually make a lineart for a drawing but just clean up the sketch , it wont be used anyway

I usually separate them by colors , mostly so i can Alpha lock them and not worry about coloring over parts

When coloring i use a soft airbrush to have gradients within the shading , so its not one solid color . How i shade is very blocky , lots of triangles lol (if im using CSP i love using the lasso fill tool ) but there are parts especially in the skin where I keep it smooth and blended, usually nose and cheek area . Using an asaro head is usually a good start to learning how to shade faces with planes in mind

Depends on the character, but I like adding shadows on the lashes/brows itself , make it look solid and 3d , it makes the eyes pop more imo

Using multiply layer to make the shadows darker for more contrast

At some point I’d merge everything together so i can just paint in one layer, easier to fix things with liquify too ; if im in CSP i keep the separate layers in one folder just in case i need em later but i cant really do that in Procreate cos of layer limits

This is the part where i make the shading more painterly .,To make the shading look sharper , i like adding lines on the edges .

The fun part : adding the ✨

This is the part where I add textures , either from texture images or with screentone/hatching brushes. This is also around the part where i add the character’s accessories and stuff like scars and freckles (its just easier to add smaller things near the end than having them accidentally painted over at the start)

Whenever I feel like the drawing looks too much of a similar shade / temperature , I use a gradient map+layer effects (masked) on parts to give it variety . Technically you can do this by just having a layer effect on and manually adding colors but gradient maps make me go “ooooh didnt think of that color there “

CSP also has a posterization filter that i like using when i feel like some part looks too smooth to me.

I sometimes add in sketchy lines , and seeing how cool it looks in Marvel Rivals art ive been adding it more lol

Artists that influenced me are : Nesskain, Toni Infante , Valorant’s 2d art(their main artist is Suke) ,Arcane , Spiderverse and the most recent one ive been obsessing over is Marvel Rivals ( its got everything i want my art to be when it grows older lmao )

Process/breakdown under the cut!

This is the rough sketch I drew overtop of- I wanted to focus on this character's swoopy round shapes bc I really liked that about the design!

I went on to paint the whole character in a single layer which is VERY NEW TO ME I usually depend HEAVILY on separate layers for coloring- not to mention I usually depend on LINEWORK! I also painted this with a default pen with super variable pressure sensitivity. Working with a hard brush like that I can't depend too heavily on soft textures to obscure my shapes/mistakes. In hindsight I should have gone in and tried to do MORE shading and lighting detail in this way to train my eye for values but alas I grew weary with details.

I went in then and added some fire - one layer behind and one in front (yes, falling back into depending on layers. Sue me lmao)

I had the fire idea from the beginning because the character sheet notes how Akrei'kha is very heat resistent!

I finished up by adding a color dodge layer for some harsher lighting using an orange color almost the same as the fire. Yes once again an instance of my cowardice to ruin the original art. If I had been braver I would have added this more intense lighting straight onto the first layer. Then of course I added the subtle gradient to the backdrop, the text at the top and my signature :)

In summary: I am proud of how this turned out, though I worry there was some detail obscurity/loss especially in the facial area. This character is very dark colored and sometimes I find it hard to keep details clear if I'm not careful.

I've never really done a process breakdown like this before and I'm not sure WHYY I felt compelled to, maybe because I'm doing all this in an attempt to learn and experiment. I worried it would be annoying but like.. I suppose nobody is obligated to click the 'expand' button and read the whole thing lmao

I’m bad w words so I’ll use ALOT of pictures as an explanation for the way I usually draw massivecreep™️ lol

Squares are almost always my base to start off any drawing- I find it wayyy easier to build off of than circles cuz it kinda has a chin built into it if that makes sense—

chin and ears connecting- it’s gonna be dif depending on where you want them to be facing- the square is mainly just a suggestion imo.. even if I add guidelines facing left il sometimes just say ‘nah make em face right’ so don’t get too caught up there etc

hair— idk.. how it works honestly.. whichever side is further is slightly balding is the best way I can explain it lmao.

curtain bang on one side, bald on the other.

facial features (eyes, nose, mouth, eyebrows, blush.) ((the blush is the carrier imo—))

idk again LMAO just pupils n neck 😭

his build is a lot more.. Twink like ig..? He doesn’t have very broad shoulders- until you compare it w the rest of his body, even then he is very slim and lanky.. also he has like weird padded shoulder things that I like to draw sometimes— idrk tho-

if you look back on any of my art you’ll see the basic sketch lines for the head- I’m not one to ink my art cuz it just feels too.. polished.. ig? Like- Less personal to me cuz it’s ‘cleaned up’ so I don’t bother w that, instead I sketch it and just darken the lines I want while keeping most of the sketching layers underneath at lower opacity. (I use this same technique w other brushes though they usually look a bit sharper since the brush I primarily use is custom made by me and has a very soft paintbrush like feel- the others are gonna look and feel more ragged in comparison so— keep that in mind if you try to replicate!)

They all follow this basic principle though-

Square, chin+ear, facial features (most of em at least—), hair, and anything else.

I also follow Tamakuz style when it comes to facial structure—

masacriks eyes are very— specifically crafted, shall we say lmao.

They can be broken down into some pretty simple shapes- though it changes w each expression, the wider the lid the more smug he seems imo lol, also if it’s rounder or flatter it changes the whole face completely—

As for his mouth I honestly have no idea.. I struggle w his mouth sm I just make him have that “:/“ mouth most the time LMAOOO though I’ll still show how I do it when he does have a smile :)

I’ll use the first one as an example

Also understanding what facial features move w each expression is kinda important— I highly recommend switching between these two photos to see what I moved/what changed, (his eyebrows, his eyes, mouth obviously, and bit of the nose mainly lol.)

more examples of mouth structure— it’s very flat on top and very triangle-esk on the bottom.

his lil hair things I use freely btw- they are fun to mess with depending on his emotions (lil bug man…) but I don’t always do that. Often it makes the drawing feel less serious to me- so I usually only do that on doodles and goofy things instead of my bigger projects.

thank you!! honestly the process in this one was really all over the place, but here's a breakdown of the layers essentially: make random shapes (preferably triangular), add random colors and brushes on top and apply layer effects (mostly "glow dodge" my beloved)
