How can I help?

You can do plenty of things to help the artists and us!

To help the artists you can do the following:

Comment under reposted images to ask reposters to ask for proper credit, and tag the artist in these posts.

Send the artists’ messages or asks telling them about the repost.

Report the repost.

To help us, you can do the following:

Submit screenshots of reposter accounts (whether on Tumblr, Instagram or otherwise) to our Tumblr along with the artists' names, if the account does not give proper credit.

Send us asks with names of Instagram accounts so we can ensure they are crediting fanartists properly, and take appropriate measures as we have mentioned in our introduction.

Share the posts we make.

Tag artists if we have not already mentioned them.

Two Important Things

We’ve received several asks about whether we will be able to track tracers as well with this blog, and have decided to address it in a post instead of the several separate replies. 

After much thought and discussion, we have decided that while this issue definitely also needs to be addressed, it’s outside of our expertise and our mandate. We’ve been trying our best this week to get the project addressing reposters off the ground (and hope that we’ve been making progress so far!), and do not have enough people right now to divert resources to pursue this very different issue. We would encourage you though to take action if it is something dear to you, as we have done! Consider how you might be able to best bring this to the attention of social media platforms, and to artists and to the general fandom, and how you might be able to affect change! I am sorry that we are unable to help right now, and wish you all the luck!

Secondly, we’ve received a related ask regarding the subject matter of the material that we will screenshot, and asking whether we will refuse to use our resources to help artists who may ship in ways that we do not. While we’re still fairly new at this, and haven’t really established our policy on material that might be considered questionable yet, our most basic rule is we will try not to post onto our website any screenshot or photo that might prevent some fans and artists from using our resource.

You'll notice for instance, that we will not post nsfw art on our own blog so that our blog can be used more widely as a resource even by artists and fans who cannot view this material. We also don't post art that might be questionable in terms of ships or situations for the same reason (so that others who are using our resource who do not want to see those things can feel safe doing so). If an artist does create nsfw/questionable pieces, you will still find them in our posts sometimes if the art that has been reposted from them will not prevent others from using our blog, as we agree that resposting hurts them as well and they should also be alerted! In addition, we provide the name of the Instagram account in our posts. Mod Fire will sometimes go in and tag nsfw artists even though their work is not visible on our site. Please do as you’ve already done, and visit our screenshots, visit the posted Instagram account, and tag artists that we may have missed.

New Note for Artists

Unfortunately, it looks like Instagram only allows artists to report that their own work has been reposted without permission!

We are still happy to do the initial legwork though: we will continue to search for Instagram accounts that repost artwork without giving proper permission, and will message the owners of these accounts, asking for them to stop. If they are unwilling, then we will post screenshots of their galleries, and will tag as many affected artists as we can find.

We will leave it to you then afterwards to report these accounts. If you need any information about reporting these accounts, we’d be happy to help!

Information for Artists

Our main goal is to ensure that artists have control over where their work is posted, and to alert artists whenever possible whenever work is being posted against their wishes! To help us, it would be great if you could go to this spreadsheet to indicate to us how we can best help. 

Artists who do not care for reposts Listing your name under this column means that you do not mind if your work is posted on other platforms uncredited. If you list your name here, we will no longer tag you in our posts (although we might not be able to stop others from tagging you in their comments!)

Artists who only want their art to be reposted with credit Listing your name under this column means we will only tag you if we find your art reposted without credit. 

Artists who want to be asked first  Listing your name under this column means that we will only tag you if the reposter has not indicated that they have approached you about reposting your work. This might be difficult for us to decipher sometimes! 

Artists who do not want their art to be reposted Listing your name under this column means that we will tag you whenever we see your art reposted, regardless of whether proper credit has been given.
