Detail of the #inks for the new giclee print I’ll be releasing soon based on the #KelleyJones #Batman #REDRAIN series. Last week @DesignerCon invited me to take over their IG account for a few hours to give a mini-tour of my studio and do an #artdemo . THANK YOU DCON!! Out of fear (and more fear) I knew I had to bring something cool to the takeover. I had always loved the Kelley Jones version of Batman. He was my generation’s #BerniWrightson! So I used the opportunity to finally do my version of one of my art heroes' version of the iconic character. Plus, I had Batman on the brain from releasing the #Joker print the week before. . I left the last post with scanning the pencil sketch, doing a little clean up in photoshop, and then printing out the sketch onto bristol board. In this case, it’s cold-press watercolor paper that I had closest to me. It feels like bristol so why not?! . Once the sketch is printed I’ll spend about 10 minutes going over it with an HB pencil to tighten up the drawing. Also (by dumb luck) the toner from my printer doesn’t permanently stick to the paper’s surface. Which is great! I can erase the printed sketch after inking it. So yeah… . Once I’m done #inking I’ll scan it at 600dpi, drop it into photoshop, and save it as a bitmap tif. . I was showing the final piece to a friend and he suggested it needed more to balance it out. He was right. Stupid jerk! I designed this as if someone were going to get it tattooed on their upper arm. So I added some spooky smoke behind it to help tie the composition together. I wasn’t sure how it would look so I printed out the #inked drawing and sketched how I wanted the flow to go. Then with a sheet of vellum, I inked the smoke lines with a Pitt pen.
