Dharma 🕊
I realized while writing one of my posts, that I talk a lot about dharma. I want to make sure everyone understands what that means.
In Vedic astrology, Dharma is your soul’s path. It's the right action aligned with your nature, purpose, and growth, and alignment. When you live your dharma, life tends to flow. When you fight it, things often feel blocked or off-track. Think about the times when your direction just feels wrong, but you can't explain why.
In Vedic thought, human life is said to be guided by four goals:
Dharma (Purpose)— Right action, truth
Artha (Resources)— Material security, wealth, income
Kama (Desire) — Pleasure, fulfillment, love
Moksha (Liberation) — Freedom from worldly attachment, spiritual release :)
Dharma comes first. Without it, the rest are unstable. It’s the foundation.
The Dharma houses are:
1st house – self, identity, birth karma, physical body. "Who am I?"
5th house – intelligence, creativity, children, past-life merit. "What do I express?"
9th house – higher learning, spiritual direction, gurus, blessings. "What do I believe in?"
Dharma is the foundation of life purpose — without it, we struggle to form a stable identity (1H), create meaningful legacies like children or art (5H), or pursue higher knowledge that elevates the soul (9H).
If these houses (and their lords) are strong, you often have a clearer sense of purpose. If they’re challenged, you may go through more cycles of confusion or redirection before aligning with your dharma. You may have noticed it yourself that some people know from a very young age what they want in life vs. others that often struggle with confusion about their purpose.
Key Indicators of Dharma:
A strong 1st, 5th, or 9th house or their lords
Benefic planets like Jupiter or Sun placed in these houses
Trinal lords (1/5/9) connected to each other
A well-placed Atmakaraka (soul indicator, It shows your soul’s primary lesson in this lifetime)
Navamsa (D9) chart that supports dharmic planets like Jupiter, Sun, or lagna lord. D9 shows your soul’s evolution. It often activates more fully after age 30–36, after people have learned things - about themselves, about others, about the world around them.
Dharma ≠ Career
Dharma can include your career, but it’s not limited to what you do for money. You could be a lawyer, a teacher, an artist, or a parent and your dharma could be expressed differently in each.
Dharma is more about the kind of impact you’re meant to make, the karmas you came to resolve, and the truths you’re here to embody.
Finding Your Dharma
You can’t miss your dharma. Even detours are part of it. But here are 3 tips to help you get closer to it:
Track your Atmakaraka journey. It's the planet you’re being shaped by.
Look at the 9th house in D1 and D9. This is the seat of dharma (higher learning, beyond traditional education haha)
Pay attention to what keeps calling you back. Your dharma often repeats itself or calls you again and again until you align with it.
If you’ve ever seen me refer to dharma in my answers, I hope this post helps you understand the framework I’m speaking from.
I grew up in a Vedic culture where this was part of daily life, so I may use it naturally, but I also want to honor that others may be encountering it for the first time. Thank you for your lovely questions, as always 🤍
