Weekend Drinks
It’s Thursday today, which means everyone must be getting super thrilled about how close we are to the weekend! This blog has to be anonymous, because I’m about to say: I hardly get any work done on a Thursday! All that anticipation… I’m kidding of course. But… in actual fact I’m much more productive on Fridays because I know it’s here it’s here it’s here as opposed to the “almost-but-not-quite” feeling of Thursdays.
I’ve listed some of my beloved Sydney cafes in previous posts, so now it’s time to talk about the fun weekend stuff: drinking. Dancing. Drinking. (Did I mention drinking?)
I looked back over my diary for the past few weeks, and the places I have been for drinks recently include:
The Courthouse: 202 Australia St, Newtown
An old favourite. My first pub love.. until I started going to The Courthouse, I used to be so suspicious of pubs, because I don’t drink beer. I used to only like cute little small bars with rooftops, like Corridor or Zanzibar. The Courty has a casual, friendly feel. Everyone I know likes it, which makes deciding where to meet a lot less painful.
Madame Fling Flongs: 1/169 King St, Newtown
We went here after eating (delicious!) burritos at Guzman Y Gomez, where tequila was consumed, so memories of Madame Fling Flongs also have a haziness to them. I imagine it was excellent as always, though on that night the waitress seemed to have a great deal of trouble understanding my friend (who was speaking English).
The Velvet Room (upstairs at the Bank Hotel): 324 King St, Newtown
The Velvet Room is so swish and swanky. And they make the drinks you need them to. After a couple of visits, I feel confident enough to generalise and say: there are some very attractive women who frequent the Bank Hotel’s upstairs section, if you are the sort that likes attractive women.
Ching-a-lings: 133 Oxford St, Darlinghurst
I love this place: my favourite detail is their lighting: wire cages full of light bulbs (however, these aren’t responsible for the resident eerie/sexy red glow). It’s nice for a quiet spot to drink and hear some great music as you get progressively more legless. (I would know.) I’m going to go out on a limb and say that while it doesn’t share the same level of popularity as some of its small bar peers that are in the same vicinity, this is my favourite of them all. I’ve certainly been coming here the longest.
Pocket Bar: 13 Burton St, Darlinghurst
I love this bar. They make good cocktails, play good music and have comfortable seats. Enough said. (But as a postscript… It is so visually appealing: everywhere you glance, you’ll find something that draws your attention.)
Shady Pines: 4/256 Oxford St, Darlinghurst
I hate places with lines. Especially if they shut at 12pm. But Shady Pines’ popularity hasn’t dwindled since it first opened, so that’s the price you pay I suppose. I am sadly doomed to have many friends whose vice is specifically served at Shady Pines. So we come here a bit.
Eau de Vie: 229 Darlinghurst Rd, Darlinghurst
I love this bar. They have amazing cocktails and if you get a comfortable spot which fits all of your party, you’re golden. I will do a proper, longer post later. Cause it’s awesome.
El Loco (Excelsior Hotel): 64 Foveaux St, Surry Hills
I love the food and drinks here but (this is going to sound like I am about 60 years older than I am) I hate how trendy/busy it gets. I’m in my mid-twenties now, I feel too old to be scrounging for stools and shouting over the din to be heard by my friends. It’s definitely a fun vibe, but the best time I went here was on a Friday afternoon around 5pm. My friend and I sat outside at a table with our tofu tacos (so good! Who knew!?), tequila cocktails & tequila shots, and even after a random group of guys meeting for after-work drinks came and shared our table it was still relaxed and easy going. Best Friday evening!
The Forresters: 336 Riley St, Surry Hills
Great, but so crowded! Otherwise.. What more to say? It’s a Surry Hills pub! They are all like that. (A future post in itself I think: the Slurry Hills Pub Crawl.)
Tio’s: 14 Foster St, Surry Hills
I love their tequila with coffee & condensed milk cocktail so much I’ve been making it at home with Patron XO regularly since first trying it at Tio’s. I like coming here despite it having some of the same issues at Shady Pines. Clearly, what I won’t do for whisky, I will do for tequila.
The Arthouse Hotel: 275 Pitt St, Sydney
This was very very empty on the Saturday night I came with some friends. We shared several jugs of cocktails before going to the ballet. I can say to you honestly, our time here was well-spent. It was exactly the right place to come to talk and drink at ease without needing to sexually harass your companion just so you could get close enough to be heard by them.
Bacco Wine Bar: Level 2, Queen Victoria Building (QVB) 455 George St, Sydney
They had run out of the key ingredients for every drink my friend and I wanted this particular night, so they created new ones for us. Way to keep your customers in your thrall. (The food and desserts here are divine, by the way).
Establishment: 252 George St, Sydney
I would normally not pick to go here, but it was… not horrible, when I went. (They had the right brand of gin, and that’s what counts, surely.) There was music playing, it was very crowded. My friends were having fun & we did dance a lot. Not really sure what more to say… A really drunk guy tried to pick me up at the bar, which (for some reason?) meant the bar stuff took everyone around me’s order, meaning I had to stay there with him for longer; clearly my “help me” look needs some work.
The Gin Garden: 252 George St, Sydney
This is behind Establishment and it is charming! (Even with the Friday night crowd spillage from Establishment.) So many types of gin plus a beautiful outdoor area, and a bathroom that smells like bubblegum. (My memory’s pretty hazy from this period of the night… I just remember I liked it a lot and wanted to come back, preferably for an afternoon drinking session.)
A lot of my favourite bars (some included above) deserve their own separate posts, but at the same time - I do value having an array of choices when picking my evening pursuits :)
