aaaaaaaaa. hello. im finally writing again. here's some bits and stuff
-
The whole room smelled wet and rotten. “What are we doing?” Alexei asked. His heart threatened to pop out of his chest and roll onto the floorboards. It would come to a stop, he thought, right in front of Nero's feet.
“You're helping,” Erastus replied. “Nero, would you?”
Nero grabbed Alexei. It was rough, impersonal manhandling, and yet still Alexei found himself to be sixteen again, remembering the way Nero's boot felt as it slammed into his chest.
“Don't fucking touch me!” he snapped. Alexei kicked. Alexei punched. Alexei sank his teeth into the toned, salty flesh of Nero's arm.
“I don't have time for little boys and their whining,” Nero replied. He whistled, and something in the corner shuffled as Alexei was forced to his knees.
The source of that rotten scent revealed itself. It was a dog, well over the size of a bear. Built more like one, too. The further it came from the shadows, the louder Alexei heard its breathing. Heave in, heave out. Muscles rippled across its body. Several looked far too big or strangely shaped, as if there were extra. As if they were cancerous.
“This is my dog,” Nero said. His hand was firm against the back of Alexei's neck. “If you do not behave, I am going to let him kill you. Understood?”
The dog's face was inches away from Alexei's. He saw blood clotting and congealing between its teeth, which were as long as his fingers. When it exhaled, a warm, suffocating spray settled on Alexei's skin.
“Yes,” Alexei replied.

the moral of arthur wip is that if youre a cop you should quit your job, kill your boss, and start an antifascist grassroots organization instead
might I be permitted to know more about Arthur’s Gender Stuff TM?
YES ^_^
Were Arthur to have a 2025 understanding of gender and labels, he would use they/she/he pronouns and identify with the labels transneutral, transfeminine, bigender, agender, and/or genderfluid. or, like, be accurately described by them, anyway. Arthur herself would probably say "nonbinary" and move on. A public transition of theirs would probably include going by she/they to those they don't know, but privately prefering loved ones mix up pronouns equally. a sort of "i really do still identify as a man (especially a queer man) and it's an important part of my gender but i don't trust random people not to erase my identity" classic bigender problem.
in-story, Arthur is raised in a hyper masculine and repressive environment with the groomed intention of essentially being his father 2.0. their mother wants them to be exactly as controllable but exactly as violent, and both parents find repressive gender roles a good way to make sure arthur's feelings (in general, not just gender related) are never expressed or examined. male intimacy, gender nonconformance, and general emotional closeness beyond sex are discouraged. because of this, just as it takes him about a million years to accept his queer attraction to Alexei, it takes him equally as long to acknowledge a nonbinary gender. the closest she gets in the first 20 years of her life is with alexei, who is a fan of nonconformance in general, and encourages exploration of anything (though alexei also doesnt really have an understanding of "gender identity" as a concept beyond the fact he himself is a man, and doesn't think about it much).
Rosalind (an intersex woman) and Orion (a nonbinary person) just like, existing and being themselves, definitely make Arthur understand gender and bodies better. but at the same time she's scared, because she always is; the idea of being both a *WOMAN* (transfemininity) and being *NOT JUST A MAN* (transneutrality & bigenderism) are both world-shattering in her old life. i think her relationship with rosalind (which feels gay, just like alexei) and how content orion seems being themself forces him to think a lot harder about it all.
im not actually sure where im going to have her be at about it at the end though? i want it very clear they aren't a cis man, but also for it to be understood that *any* binary labeling of arthur's gender is lacking, but i don't know how developed their own understanding will be. im definitely going to put in that they start dressing and like acting (in a cultural sense) more androgynously.
ty for the question ^_^
