#2600 - Uropetala chiltoni - Chilton's Giant Dragonfly

AKA Mountain Petaltail, and kapokapowai, meaning "water snatcher", refering to the long extendable jaw of the juveniles, that shoots out to snatch prey.

I was DELIGHTED to see this one, spotted sunning itself on the path by @purrdence whilst I was photographing stuff far behind.

100mm wingspan, only slightly smaller than the similar Uropetala carovei, and described as a separate species in 1921 based on specimens collected from Arthur's Pass.

Modern Petalurids include only 11 species, but they've been around for at least 150 million years. Very unusually for dragonflies, Petalurids have semiaquatic larvae - this species digs burrows in soft soil around swamps and seeps, and spends 5-6 years emerging at night to hunt.
