The World’s Only Alpine Parrot
My Aotearoa holiday goal was to capture the endangered kea and its gorgeous underwing, visible only during flight. My first sighting at Arthur’s Pass was disheartening as they were rummaging through rubbish. Weeks later, my determination led me to capture them again, but this time in their natural alpine habitat. Part 1/2 of a little project I did, nz birds in watercolour. Picked my favourites, but there were so so many
I split the post into 2 cuz I was exceeding the tags allowance! I am too lazy to post all these separately, hence a multiimage post. Enjoy

hello i would like to inform trafficblr of the Kea
the Kea is the worlds only alpine parrot, hailing from New Zealand, with a wingspan of 3 feet. they have a gorgeous array of colors; mostly brown and ashen grey, with blue and olive green wings and orange under feathers.
these are the definition of a pesky bird…
they’re considered to by the world’s smartest bird - yes smarter than a raven - who’s intelligence rivals a monkey’s. one report of a Kea with a broken beak says the bird wedged two pebbles between its tongue and lower mandible in order to correctly preen itself.
they’re extremely curious and have stolen many items from tourists, from passports to clothing to food scraps. they also can digest rubber??? and have ripped off the rubber lining from car doors. they can even break into houses using cat/dog doors to raid their garbage and know how to use a sliding door.
they are also birds of prey
yes you heard me. a parrot that’s a bird of prey. same as an owl or an eagle. they eat rabbits and other birds but are also omnivores. there is a long running controversy on whether or not the Kea has preyed on sheep. a bird the size of a cat has taken down sheep by eating the fat from its backside, leading to infections.
now, i wanna see more grian fan art of him as a Kea parrot. it fits him so well i want that pesky bird boy to be the Kea
