The one time I have seen double-decker busses used for actual transportation outside of London is Melbourne - some of the buses used in the airport-to-CBD shuttle are double-decker (the rest are those articulated double-length ones, we've been talking about running the trains to the airport for 50 years, and we're finally planning to start building one next year which will hopefully be ready 2029, but for now high-capacity buses are the best we can do. Still better than most of America)

Oh yeah, articulated busses are a thing in the US, fairly common in bigger cities that have their shit together irt public transportation. That seems to be the method of choice for increasing per-bus capacity here.

There's probably some underlying issue with bridge heights or highway sign heights. Most areas I've lived in, there's a bridge or underpass in the area that's notorious for sheering the tops off of tall vehicles and the news has a steady stream of hilarious pictures of semis and occasional RVs jammed into them. Like, there's always signs and often "if you hit this dangling thing you will hit the bridge" thingies too but people still run into the bridge/underpass.
