Going through my drafts, and I found a failed attempt to make a spaceship Christmas special related to this story. Unfortunately, it’s not going to turn into a finished Christmas special, because the only part I really want to write is this exchange between the spaceship captain and the director of the holographic Christmas show.
First comes a male voice, stiff with authority and deep as the star-filled black. “I thought you would welcome the chance to do something different.”
A low-toned female voice--our director, who sounds like she’s in a royal snit. “I have sacrificed nearly all of my artistic principles to your low-brow tastes, but I draw the line at pantomime!”
“Commedia dell’arte is a highly respected theatrical tradition!”
Since I already wrote that part, I’m not all that interested in attaching a story to it. But I wanted you to know about this, because I’m very amused by the dynamic between the humorless artiste of a director and the Highly Respected Starship Captain who loves slapstick.
