Some would say that the phenomenon of locker room talk transcends race, species and sexual orientation – as some simply regard it as an unfortunate inevitable reality. Just put a congregation of men anywhere, it was bound to happen. No matter the context of the conversation at hand, the topic always somehow shifts to sexual matters. Regardless if they were metas, capes, demi-gods, or aliens – at the end of the day, males will engage in reductive and usually chauvinistic pissing contests about their sexual conquests.

A smug grin formed on Hal Jordan’s mouth, “What are the chances of us fucking the same girl?”

The Flash gave him a disgusted look, as if he was completely repulsed with the thought of entering the same space as Hal Jordan’s community dick, “Don’t be fucking gross, Hal.”

“Damn, we got a certified herofucker, boys!” Hal hollered out as he celebrated the fact that he fucked the same chick as the rest of the capes – his newly found long-lost hole brothers.

So, since the worldbuilding is so complex in Between the Stars, I’m trying to incorporate it properly into some of the Minphling characters, to avoid exposition dump. Part of that includes writing short chapters from the perspective of random Minphlings who cross paths with the hybrids. Which will help the world feel lived in too. 

Artim is one of the more major Minphling characters, so here’s what I’ve got for him. He spends his early childhood in a Yirn community, following that half of his heritage. However, during this time the Yirn islands are leaderless and fragmented, because their monarch has been killed in the New Chapter space station attack. Additionally, the power struggle on the mainland has trouble spilling over onto the islands due to simple geography. Harder to take over several thousand islands than one big continent, you know?

Because of this fragmentation, many Yirn communities infight and struggle over what side they want to be on. Unfortunately for Artim, his develops Purist sympathies which means it’s no longer safe for him as a half-Yirn, half-Alune child. He, his Alune mother, and his Yirn father flee. This is a big deal and a sign of just how rotten the war has made Minph. Yirn communities do not push out their own, and yet.

The rot extends to the Alune too. His mother’s kin won’t take him or his father in, being against cross-nation families. The Alune do not abandon their kin, and yet. 

So they wander, always trying to stay one step ahead of the armies and drafts. This is the fate of many families like his. His father dies. With Artim’s father gone, his mother eventually abandons him, resenting the target he puts on her back. 

So Artim, barely a teenager, is left alone on a war-torn planet where his heritage puts him in danger. This is the fate of many children like him. And like those children, he finds companionship with other estranged people. This is how he meets Esnie, and half-Yirn, half-Sophren teen. 

Esnie and Artim are inseparable by the time the hybrids show up and the story begins
