Art Blessings on Saudi Arabia: Sebastião Salgado’s 1st exhibition
I found about his exhibition through SaudiArtGuide and I was not sure if he was coming; in fact I doubted such things may happen that soon in Saudi Arabia, but after searching about the exhibition information I knew through a Brazilian website that he was already here.
His solo exhibition was held on Hafez Gallery at Jeddah but before attending the opening at 27th of April, I was able to pay a visit to the Arabian Wings gallery and was lucky to see their huge space embracing 1000 art works’ show. I know that Jeddah is advanced in terms of art and its contribution to the Saudi art scene, but I admit that the size of the space and the professional presentation surprised me.
There, I talked to the artist and the co-founder of Arabian Wings Mohammed Bahrawi who gave me some insights and guidance on the research I am working in about the Saudi Art scene.
At the evening I went to the opening of Sebastião Salgado’s exhibition. Seeing his iconic photos in prints for the first time was something fascinating to the level that I kept going around his works for no less than five times, specially with the fact that I have been looking at his photos for the last five years since the first time I came across his work back in Rio de Janeiro and bought his photobook “Trabalhadores” which shows the workers around the world.
Usually, I am not up to approaching celebrities but talking the legend was something out of question. Sebastião Salgado was humble enough to let me take a portrait of him and even stepped back in the light realizing that I was struggling with the right exposure without having to ask him.
I wished If I could find some of his books to buy and get his autograph but this is wasn’t the case, unfortunately.
I am happy about this experience, happy to see such exhibitions happening in Saudi Arabia. This makes me greedy as I am looking forward inviting more and more of influential international photographers and artists to here, not just for showing what they have accomplished but with sharing how they accomplished with the people in the Kingdom.
