Amanda Palmer - The Art of Asking

Ex-Dresden Doll Amanda Palmer shows a world that is so simple yet so distant: the world of communication, love and understanding. This book is a mix of Palmer’s personal life, her past as a living statue, a stripper and a rock star and her relationship with his husband Neil Gaiman, and her unique approach to life, the life where everybody has the right to ask and the right to be asked. She also has a lot to say about crowdfunding, the form of art funding which has been on the rise in the last decade or so.

Palmer’s relationship with her fans is heartwarming. It’s common for artists to say that their fans are like a big family, but in Palmer’s case that seems to be true. She’s constantly in touch with her fans not only in social media but in face to face. She says that post-show signing sessions and hanging out with fans are almost as important than the show.

Palmer’s major skill is not only asking but the raw human connection she puts herself in everyday life. The message is comforting: almost anything can be solved, if one speaks the authentic truth. 

This book is an interesting read even for those who’ve never heard of Palmer. It’s also simply fun and full of interesting side stories and anecdotes.

I will never in my life be able to properly thank @amandapalmer for everything she is in my life. I recently re-opened my copy of #artofasking and it was like reading it for the first time. My journey and hers are so intertwined - as we all are with each other. There is such a beautiful oneness in all of us... and my heart is blown wide open.

I’ve had a problem feeling real all my life. I didn’t know until recently how absolutely universal that feeling is. For a long time, I thought I was alone. Psychologists have a term for it: imposter syndrome. But before I knew that phrase existed, I coined my own: The Fraud Police.The Fraud Police are the imaginary, terrifying force of “real” grown-ups who you believe—at some subconscious level—are going to come knocking on your door in the middle of the night, saying: We’ve been watching you, and we have evidence that you have NO IDEA WHAT YOU’RE DOING. You stand accused of the crime of completely winging it, you are guilty of making shit up as you go along, you do not actually deserve your job, we are taking everything away and we are TELLING EVERYBODY. I mentioned The Fraud Police during a commencement speech I recently gave at an arts college, and I asked the adults in the room, including the faculty, to raise their hands if they’d ever had this feeling. I don’t think a single hand stayed down.
