"Short On Time" ♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤ It’s barely four-thirty and the Big Bear makes his appearance in the brisk northern night sky as ambient city light blues the firmament and luminates “BNSF 6262 West” occupying the crossovers at Sunset Jct – a rare occurrence – as a MofW crew hurries to wrap up repairs on Latah Jct just a few hundred yards ahead. Its crew will go “dead” in three short hours after having taken charge of the priority “Z” train merely 25 miles east at Hauser, Idaho. Such is the traffic level on BNSF’s northern corridor. But Seattle East (dispatcher) has further unwelcome news for the crew who’ve been instructed to tie down at the less than thousand-souled community of Odessa nestled in the Channeled Scablands of Eastern Washington some seventy miles west on the Columbia River Sub, as he reluctantly gives them a heads-up (or down) that there’ll – most likely - be no van to deadhead them into Wenatchee. Instead they’ll be thumbing a ride with the next westbound into Wenatchee. In vain consolation, he assures them that there’ll be several westbounds so their wait shouldn’t be too long, they – dispatcher and crew alike - hope. Before their banter ends the crew have their train moving, and moving fast. They have an on the fly meet in ten little miles at Lyons with a counterpart short-on-time “Z”. "Into the Night" ♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤ The world at large may rest at night, but not completely for if ever there were an industry that epitomizes “24/7” it would be railroads. There is no distinction between “night” and “day” in the world of railroading. Night is simply the other half of a 24-hour day in which to move freight down the line, closer to its destination. E.g., the deltoid beam of a westbound BNSF mixed manifest cuts a blazing swath through the darkness as the crew performs a roll-by inspection of a unit covered hopper train at Algoma, Idaho, on what is arguably one of the busiest, if not most congested sections of BNSF’s physical plant.
