Excited to share that @artswestchester is working with Westchester County and the Parks Foundation to bring art to the beach at Playland Park this summer!! Whoa! Art on the Beach! NY Artists in all media are invited to submit proposals for a site-responsive work of art that will reactivate a former vendor booth (700+ sq ft) along the boardwalk. The lifeguard towers of Miami Beach are famous in a town of famous architecture. The South Beach lifeguard stations are working stations and each is a beautifully crafted work of art. This is the new rammed earth sculpture that has been erected at Hengistbury Head and unveiled today. I very much enjoyed being a part of the process of removing the outer timber casing and revealing this amazing work of art. The obelisk is constructed of layers of locally sourced clay and sand mixed with cement for stability and iron oxide used in varying degrees to provide colour variations. The coloured bands are built up to represent the layers that are visible in the exposed cliff face providing a sense of antiquity. The vertices of the obelisk allude to its man-made origins and reveal the obelisk to be a fusion of the artificial with the natural.
