Sorry if I'm being a bother. Here's a spicy question. If MDZS was not a bl novel :( . Who would be the main love interest: Jiang Yanli or Wen Qing. I think it would be JLY. I feel like some of it leaked into the canon but we just don't aknowlge it and don't have to because we have two far better canon pairings instead. What's your take? -From Aryam

this is actually kind of an interesting question because when CQL was in production, I know fans of the novel were really worried they would try to force a straight romance with either JYL or WQ, and I know in the early episodes, some new fans who didn’t know the plot of the novel actually did think WWX and JYL were being set up as a romantic pairing. so I do wonder if it was something they considered to dodge censorship, but I am fervently glad CQL didn’t go that route
to answer your actual question, I think that if MDZS absolutely had to have a straight romance for WWX, JYL is the more likely candidate: from what I know of the genre the “servant’s son falls for the young mistress” thing is a pretty classic trope, the affection between them is already present, and there’s a soap opera-y love triangle with JZX right there. But if I had my preference, it would be WQ. (I actually like wwx/wq a lot don’t tell anyone). They already have an interesting dynamic as friends and allies, and I could see it becoming a romance. And the idea of the two of them building a life together out in the burial mounds, once they’ve lost everything else, kind of appeals honestly.
