How do you fellows enjoy weird fantasy?
An Evening in Hyperborea from the Rulebook Astonishing Swordsman and Sorcerers of Hyperborea
A productive session of AS&SH
Only two players, myself and the guy playing the shaman plus his several npc hirelings. So the gold and xp only hit devided by us (and our hirelings)
We finished clearing out the nasty temple under the lotus den we’ve been messing around in and all leveled up to 4th very quickly. Also I hadn’t specified my characters gender officially? Like it never came up before in play. But if I was NOT male I could hire an Amazon we found in the temple so... And we need another fighter.... so.... in my head -she- is now a trans woman. The table doesn’t know she’s trans, I doubt it’ll come up but I know she is.
We found a weird sarcophagus with an undead lady in it- later we found out she was like??? A centuries old sorcereress?? From before some weird cataclysmic event. All that work all that time just to get killed by two assholes with radiation grenades we found last session.
I think it was in the same place that I picked up the ring of invisibility I ripped out of a snake.
Shaman had some porter hirelings because last session people kept getting knocked out. Now they’ve made so much money they left, but with some rolls and bribes shaman convinced them to open up they’d isn porter business??? In the basement of the bar we’ve been staying in, and convinced the bars owner that it’s a good idea.
I rolled terrible most of the night, again. I dunno what’s up with that.
During a fight with some beetles I don’t think I hit anything at all ever. I didn’t get knocked out at all but I got pretty close.
I’m still not sure how magic works in this system for my class??? I wanted to ask but I think I’ve leveled enough that I probably have the right numbers now?? Originally they told me to use the info from the wizard set of spell info but I’m pretty sure that’s super wrong.
But I think it’s fine now.
I do find that the setting and system is growing on me? Even though I’m largely confused by a lot of stuff? I think if I had a solid book to hold and read I could grasp the concepts better. I but I wanna not just play it more before I drop any cash on it but also like, read about the company and who’s in it first. Also I really dunno if any of my friends would even want to play it? So? I dunno.
We have a WILD ass amount of lotus leaves and powder. Still deciding what to do with it I guess, I’m interested in finding out what the group does.
The gm says some interesting things are coming next session, the evil laugh that accompanied the comment is very promising.
Level 2!
After some chatting and going over loot and doing xp counts a few of the Hyperborea group leveled up!
Myself included! I was 2xp off but one of the other players suggested to the group/gm I take some extra gold from his cut to get the treasure xp? To make up the difference and get the level.
I was trying to go over on my own (with the internet) to figure out how to level up stuff? But I might wait until next session.
I also think maybe I was told the wrong info during character creation about how my spells work? I was told to take 3 first level as base and then 1 first and second level spell for my high intelligence score and I can cast 2 first level/day
But I think that’s wizard stuff? I think I’m only supposed to have 1 plus my bonuses because I’m not a wizard I’m a death soldier/warlock? I don’t want to argue with the gm because he told me to set it up like that but also I don’t want to?? Like?? Not be playing right? You know?
I’ll decide what to do about it next session. Either way I’ve only cast 1 spell (identify) and if I only get 1+bonuses like? I’ll be fine with that. Though I might see if I can change which ones I’ve got on my list. I picked my spells by name alone because that’s what I had time for. Now Ive had more time to read through them maybe i should have A more combat friendly choice for my other first level?
1 Identify- 100gp/item identified
1 Skeletal Servent- like invisible servent but undead
1 Animate Carrion- almost like (small) animal friendship I think? or a small animal companion? But undead. 1hd undead animal that can obey simple commands until turned, destroyed, or dispelled no special features it would have if it were alive. I dunno much about like? What in the bestiary falls under this category that I can animate?
1 Command- like regular but they only get a save if they have 13+ int and only works if they understand the language you gave the command in??? But I only speak like... common and two dialects of the same language? And I dunno like? What all can be effected by that?? Can rats understand? Horses? Just humans? A Sasquatch??
2 Scythe of the Reaper- like?? Spiritual weapon?? But 1d8+1 for a length of time only gm knows and has like??? A massive range or something??? If I read it right??? And you can attack with scythe AND your regular weapon on the same turn???
Slime and Fire
Hyperborea group again this week, I missed last week.
We added another guy to the group, he’s played with everyone else lots but I’m not sure if I’ve met him in person before. He’s playing a shaman of.... nyarlathotep??? Or something like that?? So he’s the best healer of the group. He’s also the wealthiest party member.
He’s got two beefy henchmen which were immensely helpful because a lot of us rolled quite poorly. Especially me.
We were exploring this underground?? Tunnel system? That’s got like a cultist temple in it? On the other side of town from the last place we found on of those- last session that I missed the weird rat filled temple under the inn was cleared up and we live there now? For the time being I guess?
We fought some critters down there- giant centipedes and spiders and snakes and it went pretty well. The ranger and thief went down.
I found a magic ring of invisibility inside the snake.
When those two healed from this and we went back down thief triggered a trap and unleashed a “green slime” and panicked the shaman in and out of character who immediately threw all of his Greek Fire at it unfortunately he crit failed and hit me instead sending me to -2 hp. I’m not sure how I did on my death saves honestly? I’m not sure how all of the checks and saves work??
I’ve never had a character be set on fire before so this was very interesting. I was healed enough to not die as they explored a little further and I didn’t have a lot of hp to begin with so It didn’t take long to return to full health when we got back to the surface, Even with the weird health restoration rules.
The henchmen were a great help in combat but mostly they were great for carrying downed party members.
It was pretty fun.
I’m not too sure about the guy playing the shaman? He didn’t say or do anything blatantly gross but there were a few things that made me a suspicious.
An example would be:
“If you’re a fan of critical role you are not getting healed. No I’m not kidding.” Thankfully it seems his only criticism is about the bad parts of the fandom (fans getting too attached to molly and acting badly when he died, fans putting unrealistic expectations on their gms/players) and how it seems like the characters are not ever in enough danger... how it felt to him more like a “story game” than a “real” rpg. Unlike for example the right wing homophobic shit bag loves cr for some reason??? but hates that the cast is all quite liberal and they and their game are lgbt friendly.
I didn’t bother mentioning I watch/listen to it. Not so much out of concern for my characters health but because shaman and shit bag argued about it after our separate games ended and everyone was starting to leave and I didn’t want to be on the same side even vaguely as that fuckface.
I talked to werewolf gm about how the ravnica campaign she’s playing in is going. Pretty good. It sounds like the gm is learning quickly and making lots of progress each session, though he’s bad at describing like... maps and spatial things? But some graph paper is probably the easiest solution either him drawing it or somebody in the group.
Which is great to hear because he was pretty nervous about it and really wants to do a good job so he’ll feel ready to do this other, bigger, thing he’s much more excited about.
Hyperborean Shenanigans??
Now that the al restrictions are gone at the lgs the store is filling with people again.
There was s full table for a ravnica game I could have joined but the table was full so I didn’t want to burden the gm with an extra cat to herd. Also I thought that shit bag homophobe and his brother were going to play that so no.
There was hyperborea game run by one of the old dude gms I like. I’d never played this either and I’m always ready to try weird new things.
There was? I’m not sure what game happening? I think the gm came to actually either play hyperborea or run the new saltmarsh thing? But there were enough people who came that wanted to play dnd but not ravnica that he did something? This poor dude got stuck with the homophobe and his brother. But. It was kinda funny listening to him struggling to deal with them? Like the weird shit I heard was just???
So. It seems the hyperborea game is intended to be a long term thing? Or at least until the gm goes through enough modules that he’s tired of it. I don’t know anything about it. I just barely made this one character. I’ll probably do some research on what all everything is? And what does what? before next Wednesday, not that I’m sure what’s being run next week or if I’ll be able to go. We started with the module: rats in the walls.
The party: hyperborean paladin- cool dude ive played with before was a paladin in the “earth but very worse” game, Amazon Druid/ she seems nice I’ve played with her once before, hyperborean Ranger? Unknown thief?- these two are married and we’ve played a good amount of AL together they seem nice enough but sometimes the dude (ranger) puts me on edge but so far not at all like the other shit biscuits I’ve played with, Mine- ixian death soldier???? I was almost going to do a huntsman and just like? Revive my first character I played in any game here: Hugo the Huntsman. Maybe next time.
Most of the time was spent explaining how to make the characters and what stuff is but there was only 1 person who’d played before and a Fair sized group and paladin had to leave a bit early. Really only enough actual play happened for us to all kinda grasp the basic rules, most of which I’m still not clear on but I’ll see what I can look up for answers. We rolled for stuff I didn’t expect to roll for like, age height and weight?? That was interesting? I got to live out one of my greatest fantasies- be tall.
At the table I was listening in on I got to hear such things as: shit head- “don’t reference the Greek pantheon it makes me uncomfortable, all that ancient Greek stuff just makes me uncomfortable all the time” / gm-“... so... do Greeks themselves make you uncomfortable.... like? How far does that go?” That was probably the best the rest was just as weird but not as memorable I guess?
I had a pretty good time. It was nice. I also had time because we ended a bit early again that I could work on some stuff for monsterhearts that? I think my friends still want to play I think? So that was good. I don’t work on it too much because no ones terribly clear with me on “yes we want to do this thing” or not also it can be hard to focus at home so doing it elsewhere is usually what happens.
Another Wednesday night in the diamond mine.
