I’ve been thinking about the UHG CEO assassination. For context, I have 20 years working in heath insurance including at UHG. UGH is relentlessly driven by profit and nothing else. They don’t give a fuck about you. (I don’t really include the front line worker bees. They just need a job like the rest of us. To them, you’re a number on their computer screen. The executives are the ones deciding to fuck people over to maximize profits.)

Assuming the initial rumors are correct that the shooter was somehow denied insurance coverage, it’s not a shock. In fact, I’m kind of surprised Brian Thompson didn’t have a body guard. Especially since he’d received threats. His predecessor at UHG, Stephen Hemsley, supposedly kept a cellphone in the trunk of his car in case he was kidnapped. They know that they are targets, but apparently that doesn’t encourage them to rethink the greed.

What’s really new* is direct violence in response to corporate harms. And I place that squarely at the feet of Donald Trump. He’s normalized violence as the first response to any grievance. People, justifiably, feel powerless. This is just the beginning.

* New at least for the last century. In response to gilded age excesses, workers burned shit down and fought pitched battles with strike breakers to secure fair wages and better working conditions. Get ready for more of that too!
